Concourse Winner

Does anyone have knowledge of how to find a list of the Concourse de Elegance winners from past nationals , Years ( when did it start) ,planes , hope for photos.

I believe that Winfred has eight, and either the aeroplanes or the pictures....
if he doesn't make me suffer the train set, I will take some pictures and scan the photos that he has....

Are we talking about models that everyone has walked on, or do you mean Concour's?

The concours (concours d'elegance = competition of elegance) will be held on the concourse.

This is a great subject for a possible picture location on the PAMPA Web Site. Trouble would be getting pix of all of them. I know I'd be a problem.

My Citation won the very first Concours in 1977 at Riverside. I have no decent pictures of that airplane although there was a good one in a Sig dope ad for a while.

I also won in 1981 with the Intimidation. I do have a picture of that one framed with the Walker Cup (trophy) after it won the nats in 1982. Unfortunately, by that time it had gotten a lot of hangar rash including Fascal holding the covering together at the first open bay on each side ... of course on the top, what did you think!

Other concours winners over the years have included Les McDonald with a Stiletto, Joe Reinhard, and a handful of others. Windy pretty much owns the "Big Prop" franchise for the last decade or more.

Of course, there's Curt Contrata in 2000, and Paul Walker in 2002 - the latter being the only time that someone won the Concours and Walker Trophy in the same year.

2nd Time. Jim Casale did it in 1988 as well (Concours & Walker Trophy).

Both Jim and Windy received 20 points for their planes that year ... making Windy's original "Cardinal" the only 20-point airplane that did *not* win the Concours. Strange but true.

If that's the case, just to add to the "list", Gene Martine (Mariner) and Ski Dombroski (Lacemaker) must have won the Concours, also. (20 point planes)
Also, I have a picture of Bill Werwage carrying the "big prop", but I can't remember the year. (early '90's IIRC)

I believe that Stan Powell won a concourse as well with his Dove. Don't know the exact year but sometime in the 80's?

I was *scared* to mention Stan's Dove since I, erroniously, thought that it, too, was a 20 pointer. Found out it wasn't.

'94/Lubbock, I think.

By the way, the "big prop" is hand made and finished by my good buddy Arlie Prezler over in Lodi.

Both planes you note were gorgeous. I really loved the look of the Citation.

I remember that Windy won with the Tradition and with an F-16, I know there were others.

It would be great if there were pictures of all the Concours winners on the Pampa site. Great example of what can be done with talent, persistence and skill.

Yes. And tThe term comes from the 1920s-30s automobile competitions held in France (often Paris), where both the owner's (women, often) attire was judged along with the car. Color, style and coordination were important.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the same thing happened in Stunt, with the guys, of course? And women, too, if they wish to compete.

Who was one of the first top competitors who took pains to make his own personal appearance a positive one? Bob Giadini in the early '60s? Just asking, I may be wrong.

One thing I like about reading old MANs, Air Trails, etc: the essential grubbiness of the Nata, Mirror Meet, King Orange, etc competitors. Their idea of proper presentation was wearing a T-shirt that had been washed since WW 2 ended.

I can relate.

I have Windy's '92 Cardinal and will get a current color picture posted as soon as possible. It still flies pretty good too. Probably not as Concours as it once was though.

Thanks to all for the input. As Ted mentioned, this would be a good topic of interest for the Pampa Web site. This is the reason I am trying to compile the information to be added to the pampa web site.

I think that pictures of the models would really add alot to the site.

Good quality pictures are desirable, but anything will be appreciated

Two things I thought were interesting:

1) Gene Martine's 20-pointer isn't the Concours winner! According to what I read in Model Aviation, he got 20 points for appearance in 1981 - the year Ted's Intimidation won the Concours. So I'll correct one of my earlier posts - there's actually been TWO 20-pointers that didn't win the Concours.

2) Windy's Seafire won the Concours twice - they aren't two different Seafires. Based on what I've got above, I think it's the only individual plane to win the "big propeller" two times.

That's right, I had forgotten that detail. The Intimidation was (is) a very "flashy" airplane with lots of red, white and blue and stars and rivets and panel lines, press-on lettering and a cockpit and, probably most important, a very flashy I-beam appearing wing. (It wasn't really I-beam construction with strip ribs and so forth, but looked like it). It was/is also a very "sexy" appearing shape with swept tips and swoopy rudder and sub rudder and a fairly fancy full cowling.

The Mariner was a much subtler piece of work. Essentially flawless with a perfectly finished foam core wing. Don't remember if it had a cockpit or not. It had a Joe Reinhard style paint job that was perfect but subtle enough that you could walk right by it without noticing unless you took the time to really check it out.

The 1981 event does reflect the distinction often lost on people about the difference between the "concours judging" which is pretty much "what turns you on" and appearance judging which takes brains as well as beauty into consideration.

Didn't Al ever win a concours with one of the Mustangs or the Sea Fury? My memory isn't worth a tinkers but it is hard to believe he didn't win at least once.

Ted, I examined the Mariner closely at that NATS, and it did have a cockpit. I remember the control levers made out of plastic head pins and a nice instrument panel. The plane was a kind of grayish tan color overall. I think the thing that struck me about it was how subtle and understated it was. It came a lot closer to being art than most of the PA ships I've seen. I certainly don't mean to put down the "louder" designs-I'm positively green with envy at the work a bunch of you guys do-but the Mariner had a different approach and style. It spoke very softly, but very convincingly.

Mine was won with a Tempest II

I think Bill Werwage won it in 2001 with a P-47.

I believe the missing name from 1990 is Kaz Minato.I've been to the Nats every year since then and I know he won at least once.
