Engine Choice for Cardinal#0 source
Hi Gang,
I'm working on my Cardinal as I write this and I am wondering about engine choice. My options are: 1) A new OS 46 LA with a Macs muffler combo or 2) a Tower 40 that I am planning on having Len rework for me. Any thoughts on which would be the better combo? Is the lighter weight of the Tower 40 a factor? ( I have heard that the Cardinal tends to build heavy.)
Thanks
Brian

I don't know who told you they build heavy, but mine, engine, tank, prop, etal, less fuel is at 40.1 oz. I am using an ST. 46. It is just a bit nose heavy as built by the plans, but most are. After a little trimming, a 1/2 oz added aft of the rear wheel, it flies better than I am capable. Great plane. That Tower .40 should do the trick. Have fun. I am. Ty

Though you didn't say, I am assuming you are talking about the Profile Cardinal from Brodaks. ?? I also have the 92 Cardinal. If you have the Proflile Cardinal, one bit of advise, do not use the wood screws to hold on the tank via the brass angles soldered to the tank. Instead, drill holes through the fuse and use long bolts and lock nuts. Place brass tubing through the holes and run the bolts inside them. No crushing that way. Things always look nice at first, but after 5 or 6 flights, things do tend to vibrate and move.

The Tower 40 when re-worked will be a good match.

I'd recomend setting the tank into the fuse.

Brian.......As the one WHO started the Mac's muffler combo YOU WON'T be Disapointed. My VEGUS at 65 oz with the Os 46LA HAD more power then I ever thought. Try it........."MIKEY DID"

What Brian forgot to say, and y'all may have forgotten, is that he flies at 6k+ feet altitude in Colorado Springs. I don't know which would work best, a Leonard tuned Tower .40, a Tower .40 with an RJL diesel head, a Tower .40 or LA .46 with the Mac's Muffler, but as they all have the same bolt pattern, I would be trying all of them...along with keeping the weight as low as possible.
