WE have a new flying site . Thanks to Ron Cannan we are noe allowed to fly at Sand Point Navel Air Station . Next to Hanger #27 is the area.
We will have a fun fly on April 3, (Saturday) starting around 10:am.

The old Sand Point NAS/Magnuson Park is still where it always was, roughly 7400 Sandpoint Way NE, Seattle. I got MapQuest to make me a map, but had trouble getting it to post here at SSW. Got the map added to the website. It works for me...let me know if it won't work for your browser. Had a tough time remembering how to do this....

Easiest freeway access is from 130th NE exit if coming from the North. Head east, keep going, 130th turns into 125th, then runs into Sandpoint Way. If coming from Bothell/Kenmore, go down Lake City way to 125th & turn left, proceed as above. I can't recall the results of going east on 85th, 80th, 65th, or 50th, but 45th runs into Montlake, turn left at the bottom of the hill. Montlake turns into Sandpoint Way. If you are coming across Hwy. 520/North Floating Bridge, turn off to Montlake and head North. Steve

Hey, I went to Tucson? Cool! Why don't I remembr that? Actually, I just didn't go to the NW Skyraider's meeting last night. Didn't get to go fishing, either. Rats! Got to work on my daughter's car(s), and not feeling very well. Steve

It's a great place. Lots of people in the area, which may help
a bit with participation, maybe someday. You know, close enough
to civilization that kids can/do ride their bikes over to play.

John didn't mention it, but there's also a grass area
(to the right as you come in the main gate) we can use.

That's great news! Plus you also get a great view of the Seafair Hydro races (or are they held south of the 520 floating bridge)?

If my Skyraider memory serves me right (this from tales by Bob Emmett and Bob Parker), the Skyraiders used to be able to fly at Sand Point many decades ago until an ugly combat model incident shut it down.

The Unlimited Hyrdo Races are held south of the I-90 (Mercer Island) bridge, west side of MI. There was one race held out of Sand Point, sometime during the '70's. A friend/co-worker was a volunteer on the U-95, which sank during that race.

The bad combat accident had Greg Davis as one pilot, Phil Sheckler as ED, Don Zipoy as CD, Exchange Club as Sponsors, Navy as Hosts. I can't recall who the second pilot was, but it was somebody I knew. Everybody has to go to court, everybody gets named on the suit.

Another year, Jerry Painter got clipped by the outboard tip of a VooDoo and got a broken jaw from it. The Navy took care of the medical at their facility. Jerry was going to Central Washington at E-Burg at the time. The Navy Doctor asked Jerry how long he'd had that speach impediment. Jerry didn't know he was kidding, asked me if I thought he had a speach impediment! That would have been '65.

I don't recall anybody being allowed to fly at Sand Point NAS except during the contests there. But then it wasn't in my neighborhood, either. I do recall Al Rabe flying his Bearcat there, winning stunt in considerable wind. Steve

Use fuel shutoffs when you fly combat.

Right you are, Howard, thanks. My first ever combat match was against Bob Nelson at Sand Point. I won, and I can still remember the kill. I was following closely, he did an outside and pulled out inverted. My VooDoo was just behind and below, I thought "Self, you can't fly inverted, give it down elevator!". I did, zoomed right through the streamer, kill. My second match was a bit different, don't remember who it was, but I won it also. Then we were out of time, I had to flip a coin for the trophies, and got 3rd. Shoulda won it, had really good matches and clean kills in both, no crashes, no collisions, no down time issues. Steve
