El Diablo revisited

Having dutifully searched the board for stuff on the El D, and read the original magazine article, I still have questions.

In May of '03, Leonard said:

"the main spar is 1/8 x 5/8 inch balsa laid vertical. This then has a tapered cap spar placed on top and bottom, which is 1/4 x 1/2 at the center, tapering to 1/4 x 1/8 at each tip. This makes an I-Beam in effect. There is also a 1/4 x 1/2 inch center spar placed in front of this, which then becomes part of the belcrank mount."

This accounts for 1-1/8" of wing thickness. I take it that the capstrips go over the top of the cap spar, and no part of the 5-piece spar assembly touches the covering material, thus allowing extensive spar redesign. Am I on track here?

The magazine plans don't show a balance point in relation to that large elevator. Where should it be for someone who likes not too twitchy? With an unmuffled Fox per the original, do they tend to balance correctly, or lean one way or the other?

Assuming that we are not in the Kingdom of New Jersey for the moment, would adding a canopy get you into trouble with the OT police?

Your statement about the spar is correct, or that is how I'm doing mine. Plans are a little vague. The tapered spar makes fitting ribs a real pain, each have to be fit into the spar. I have the wing and the tail surfaces together, started on the fuselage at the moment. Something else, I'm went with built up tail surfaces.

A kit of the El Diablo is coming out this month and will solve all those "problems". See Builditright site.

That's great news for kit builders, but I don't build kits.
I am sure Ol'Walter's kit will be a great one!
But I'm still upset with him for not letting me build the Cobra prototype!!!! LOL!!!!!!!

A thrillfor me was the first time I met Scarinzi. Larry came down to Charlotte for a meet several years ago. I launced him a couple times. El Diablo, yellow/red flames, 4 bolt Fox 35. A TON of fun!

HI Bill. I may be wrong here, but I think he ended up building the prototype kit. I know he wanted several others to do it, by they lacked the time, Nats coming up, etc. It is going to be released this month if the handout at VSC is correct. I have two "I" beamers under construction now. Get in a groove and just cna't stop, kinda like potato chips.
Guess what type engine I picked up at VSC from Tom Lay? If you guess McCoy lightning bolt .40 stunt modified by him you guess right, and the price was sure ok. Very ok.

I have the plans by Model Airplane New early 1950's I don't remember the year I have it at home, sorry I am at work now can't check it. I also have the magazine artical in Model Airplane News. I will check CG for you later today.

Any way you could scan the article out and make it available?

Be vewwy, vewwy careful building that model if you are using the magazine plans. There are are some great errors on them. You may notice the side and plan views do not agree, and reading the instructions makes it even worse!
Yes, the cap strips do go over the spar.
My choice on CG would be very close to the spar, but I like my models to move when I wiggle the handle. Some don't like ithem as sensitive as I do.

The plans do not show CG. The Veco Bellcrank is 3" between the control lines with a 5/8" movement. The rectangle fuel tank has a swivel joint fuel line inside to move with centrifical force up or down as the fuel moves. The fuel tank is 1" x 2" x 4.5"

what happened to the previous pictures ?????

I got a notice form Earthlink my Internet service provider my web page is receiving too much traffic. If the traffic exceeds the limit it will be shut down until the end of the month. Is there a way up upload pictures to this board? I web page is totally full the only way I can add something new to my web page is to delete something first.
