Favorite OTS model?

Just curious on who likes what.

I'm toying with the idea of building one for next season. (This season is dedicated to getting back in the air!)

Someone on this forum recently told me that my own recollection of the year that kit came out was faulty, and I couldn't have built a Circus King when I was 12, after all. If that person was correct, and I was not, it must've been a PDQ Super Clown the summer of 1952 instead!

Shsssss....don't let anyone know this..... I think the Wee Duper Zilch is about the cutest plane I ever saw!! LOL!!
I have an OS Max 10 (Looks like a 35S) to power mine when I can get to building it (Thanks to TH for the venturi). *Might* be able to get it done for Charlotte in June.
That one for OTS, the LL USA-1 (Norvel 061) for profile, a new Classic ship (Aero Tiger 36), and a repainted Geo Juno (PA 51 pipe) for Advanced. Quite diverse, I would say! With all the "sandbagging" in Advanced it will be a while before I can place, so I am going to have a LOT OF FUN this year. (As if I don't already!!!!)

But, I have to agree withe the Barnstormer. I'm awaiting an Umland myself.

Both a Combat and Stunt ship. The combat version won 1st at the nats many years ago, and the stunt version won OTS once at the VSC. Jim Lee built and flew it. I placed 9th in ots with one at the vsc some years ago.

l. First version of Lou Andrew's Barnstormer without flaps (Fox .35 stunt engine)

2. Matt Kania's Ringmaster (Fox .35 stunt)

3. Veco Smoothie (Fox .35 stunt)

4. Hound Dog (Forster .29)

While not a big-time OTS flyer, nor even much of a fan of Old Crocks, I do like my Zilch X. Decent airfoil, simple construction, no flaps, upright motor installation, takes well to a Fox 35.

Might well be a Killer Deal if using Brett's 20FP-inspired tune-up on an O.S. 25FP. Now why did I have to think of that? I am much too busy with other stuff.

Land horribly unless flying over grass which is much too tall for anything but a for-real old timer.

My first choice would be a Barnstormer. Second would be a Barnstormer and then finally a Barnstormer.

Build it light and straight and put a good Fox 35 or Max S 35 in it and you will be a happy camper.

The Barnstormer kit that Walter Umland produces can't be beat. All laser cut and top quality throughout.

Did I mention that I like the Barnstormer?

You need to look at Wild Bills Scared Kitten. It was designed as a combat plane and has a real nice wing and airfoil. The plans are in one of the old Zaick yearbooks I think. There have been 3 at various VSC's. Of course both Larry Scarenzi and I used .15 combat motors turning 22K in my case and probably 28K in Larry's. Wild bill had the other and used a normal testors .40 series 21.

Presently flying a big Easy. Really liked the Humongous, also the A-B Trixter profile. Had a lot of fun with a couple of DMECO Sportwings and a British Big Fry. Havn't decide what to build for next year: Tarus, another Sportwing or Big Fry, a smaller Easy, maybe a different Australian or British airplane. No Barnstormer, Jamison Special, Viking (had one that was fine), Ringmaster, or other run-of-the-mill airplane. Hey, if I don't fly all that good, maybe I can fly all that different.

The Yates "Dragon" is really pretty, I think a Fox .35 is commonly used, PAMPA has plans. If you want something bigger, and bigger flies better, a "Humongus" (RSM kit) would be good with a .46LA or G.51. Dr. Spark's "Wildman 60" (MA Plans) would be good with a ST G.51. Steve

Agreed. Walter produces some of the nicest kits on this planet.

RSM also has a nice selection for OTS: Humoungous, Jamison, and don't forget the immortal S-1 Ringmaster. That was my first good CL plane. Eric's kit is very faithful and very easy to build. Slap an LA 25 on it and you can get going quickly.

Haven't flown any of these, so my opinions are based solely on looks and memories from books and magazines that are older than me.

End disclaimer...

In no particular order:

Humongous, Jamison Special, Yates Dragon and Zilch X - Thinking that one of these might be my next project. Always loved the simplicity of line on these planes.

I also really liked DeBolt's Stunt Wagon and the Stunt Rocket. I think the Stunt Rocket was a Walt Musciano design. Huge wing, super-short tail moment like a Stuntwagon, kind of a cross between the Bell X-1 and a spaceship from a George Pal movie. Very cool.

Barnstormer ( I have built 6), Galloping Comedian, International Stunt Winner, 1949 Veco Chief, All American Sr.

I seem to remember this question being asked before and getting a lot of replies. Just did a search and couldn't find it.
My answer is still the Box Car Chief, but the original Barnstormer (the real one with four spars in the wing) is a close second.

I'd have to say that the All American Snr. has one of the most attractive colour schemes from the early days and is kind of brute ugly good looking like the Stuntwagon.
My next model is going to be either a Yates Dragon or a 1948 Screwball Fury Mk VII for my Pacemaker 59. Most likely the Screwball as it has a sort of P40 fuselage profile and canopy, very pretty.

John - give the Screwball a try. It's a great flying OTS bird and quite unique in appearance. Mine flys with an Anderson Spitfire on spark. I opted for the symmetric wing and I made it open cockpit. It is also take-apart. If you build it per plans, it is almost guaranreed tail heavey. I extended the nose by 3/4" and moved all the spark equipment as far forward as possible. I can furnish more info if you want it.

O.K. my turn to dig in here, these are my favorites in order of preference:

1. "Viking" Since I have a Bordak kit to build!
2. "Daily "30". I really liked the articles in SN about this airplane. How on earth could Sam fly his version with a hinge point of 47% Well, he was a speed flyer before.....
3. "Jamison Special"
4. "Barnstormer"
5. "Humongous"
6. "Stills' Stuka"
7. "The Nobler"
8. " Yates' Madman"

Never ever get to build all those, but one question. Is anyone contemplating building a Daily "30" or a "Nuts" to take to VSC "17"?

I have 2 OTS planes at the moment. A Ringmaster profile GMA Fox .35 & a Jamison OS LA .40.
Both fly great in calm conditions. When the wind comes up the Jamison is the much better flyer. What gets my Ringmaster during windy conditions is I do not know where the top of my verticle 8s will end up. My Jamison just powers right on threw.
I have watched alot of OTS plane designs fly well. Try to find one with a thick airfoil, built up fuselage & longish moment arms.

I have it on excellent authority that in the land where the O.S. 20FP/Skyray is highly regarded, almost all profiles, less the Ringmaster, respond quite well to 20FP tune-up suggested in another thread.

However, the Ringmaster flies much too fast with a 20FP, the motor of choice being 15FP instead.

We even had just such a combination up here in the NW several years ago. Sounded "funny" so I stupidly failed to pay attention. However, until some crazed interloper ruined the string of wins, it had an amazing record in competition.

My favorite OTS planes, hmm, i like a lot of them. It was hard to pick a new OTS plane to build over the winter for OTS, but I got the Brodak Viking and its working well.
