Browsing and eating lunch at the same time can lead to interesting discoveries. I just found this really neat photo of the 1977 WC team:

I'd hazard a guess that the guy in the front row, our right behind the Stiletto would have to be Les McDonald, who won the 1976, 1980, 1982 FAI World Champs. Since this is a 1977 date issue, it would seem elementary, dear Watson.

Hi Gary,
That's what I thought, but then I read the HOF article in Stunt News and it mentioned the United States as one of his designs (listed after the Hallmark), so.........
I went with that! LOL!!
Did Wynn mess up there??

It does say "United States" on the wing.

Might not mean anything, though - the plane might indeed be called something else.

Now I *am* curious as to whether there was a "United States", or just the Hallmark with that on the wing for the FAI WC????
Maybe Mr. '69 NATS will chime in here, he was pretty tight with Gene.

The plane in the picture above is *definitely* the Hallmark.

Gene's planes almost never had the actual plane name written anywhere on the airplane - usually they just had "USA" or "United States" painted on the wing instead. His Stunt Machine, Genesis, Statesman, and Hallmark (obviously) ships were all like this.

In the Hall of Fame piece in the latest Stunt News, I thought the "United States" was referring to the 2nd (bigger) Genesis-styled airplane that Gene flew in 1974. Could be wrong though.

This was the 1976 Team. The plane pictured in the photo is not the Statesman that Gene Schaffer used to qualify. Me thinks Mr. Tultz may be right. See picture below for AMA archives.

By the way... my PC comment was in regard to "the chick". Man they aren't the same if they have to be 'splained!
