VECO 19 BB Setup Used in Class

Recent discussions on the 20FP setup alluded that similar approach was done with the VECO 19BB for Class "A" Stunt. What were the setup used with respect to the following:

Plane, Prop, fuel, tank and venting, line length, launch rpm, muffler

I used the old Perfect Wedge tanks (now Brodak) with much success, but I think any of the tank set ups would probably work ok.
Run it in a strong 2 cycle with a 9-4 or 10-4 prop. Top Flite Power points should be good. haven't tried an APC. The BB 19 is a pretty strong engine to have been OOP for so long, wish K&B would get some sense and start producing them again!
Line length, start with 60 ft.

Thanks Bill for your info. I have a couple of VECO 19BB that I had only bench ran. I really like them and I am trying to learn as much as I can before selecting a project based on that power train.

Easily one of the best aircraft projects for the Veco .19BB is Lew McFarlands' "DOLPHIN". Just ask Bill Fitzgerald about it.........

As you know, any of the smaller Classic "35" size ships, built even remotely light, will fly real well with the Veco 19 BB!
And the Dolphin, IMHO, is probably the best one for it.
But, I only had profiles on my mind for some reason.

This is second-hand, but it's close.

STOCK veco 19bb
Stock venturi
Stock muffler
9-4 or 10-4 prop APC, Rev-Up, or similar
Cylinder baffles
10% SIG or similar fuel
Line length to suit, but 60-62 .015
low-profile Uniflow tank

We have swapped the FP and Veco back to back (bolt patterns are close enough that you can file the holes out to make it fit) several times. The FP is somewhat more powerful, but the Veco doesn't seem to mind larger prop as much so you can get some of the power back via improved efficiency. Of course the 20 will technically swing as large a prop as you can fit , too,(I've run as much as an 11.5-4, and I've seen 10-4 3-blades, too) but the larger diameter causes too much power loss and it really gets doggy with anything more than a 9-4 APC.

Suitable airplanes are Ringmaster (really, more than you need, and expect some pretty fast flights), Skyray 35. Flite Streak, reasonably light Twister/Banshees, Dolphin, even Gieseke Noblers if you are careful about weight. But you do have to take more care with weight with the larger models than with the 20/25FP. Mid-upper 30's and maybe 500 squares if you are careful is probably OK.

I might note that the comparison Ted mentioned and I relayed about the A Stunt planes flying better than their real stunters was with "real" stunters from the mid-70's - not "real stunters" from 2004! Airplanes powered by McCoy 40's are not much of a match for airplanes powered by PA61s (which run a very similar setup to the old Veco - except they are 3 times as big!) So I don't want to oversell it. But they do fly pretty well and if you set it up right it will fly well enough for any contest short of NATs Advanced.

p.s. Also unlike the FP, these engine can be very noisy and very annoying. The stock muffler is not nearly as effective and doesn't provide any useful resonant effect that I can see (too short, probably). Chip muffler or open exhaust is probably OK as far as running it goes - but please notify me so I can go hide in the car when you fly it. Loud and quite annoying!

Thank you for all your info and BB for the details. Do you think using the OS 20FP muffler will improve the run? I'll test it out regardless but I don't have enough experience to discern the difference.
