Profile Nobler?

Hi: In one of the threads, someone mentioned that GMA flew a larger profile Nobler ship. Does anyone know if these kits are available either kitted or custom cut? I'm a great Nobler fan to say the least, and would like to look at one if someone has a picture. Many Thanks, William

That was me. The kit was produced by Custom Models. It's a foam wing deal. Great kit with great wood. It's only half trimmed out, but boy does it "groove"!

I picked it up over seven years ago, and as I recall, I had a heck of a time tracking one down.

I have no clue as to if there are any left somewhere. It was called "The George Aldrich Special".

Mine is using an OS .35 FP and a 10x6 or 11x5 prop.

Take just a wee bit of scratching, but you could get the Brodak P-51 kit and modify the fuselage to Nobler outline, then round the tips of the wing and tail accordingly. It's a good building kit.

I have one. Silver Fox .40 from Lew. Custom Models foamie. Got it years ago, built it about 3 years ago, flew it once; neeeds some trimming. I can post a .jpg if you like (and I can figure out how to do it.

This was a foam wing job that was kitted on a limited basis by I think two different cottage operations down here in Texas at various times. GMA used it as a test rig sorta for developing motors and such and general show-off flying. The late Doc Passen made a similar kit as well for a few years.

Some years ago, before everybody had internet I bought a kit from Custom Models.

I had to call by phone to order, and when Bill picked up the phone abd said "Hello" (or was it "Howdy"?) I got the impression he was either gonna pull out a Colt six shooter or tell me to leave the town by dawn...

Doc's was called the "No Blur". He also sold something called the "Lite Streak".

Hi There, I was given one of these finished several years ago and have finally gotten around to flying it. Mine is set up with an LA .46 and does a great job with the pattern. I fly it on 63' .018 lines eyelet to eyelet. The side area is somewhat over size but this helps it to stay out in the wind. If I knew where to get another one I would! Hope your search is successful!

What sort of prop are you spinning? Maybe I need to consider more power.

Mine isn't fully trimmed yet, and I can only barely handle the beginner pattern (and that is a very dicey proposition for me at this point). This plane is my best by far, and I don't feel like destroying it quite yet

Power is addictive, Tom, and the 46 will not "overpower" it as some use the word. On the other hand, your 35S will also do a good job for you. We have one that we flew with the modified 35 FP, but the 35S will power it except in conditions you shouldn't be flying in anyway. The key is what you, yourself, said. you "don't feel like destroying it", so fly the maneuvers high at first and if things aren't working quite right, just fly it out and fix whatever needs to be fixed before starting the next flight.

Hi There, Right now I have a 12X4 Power Prop(old style not Tower's) on it. I have run 11X6 and 11X5 paddle blade Top Flite props on these engines with equal success. It all depends on the time of year, air temp, humidity, fuel and who knows? I used to think that it was a set it and forget it kind of thing. You know find the right combination and go with it. Well that dog don't hunt! You've got to experiment from time to time. Its an art not a science!

A have a Silver Fox looking for a home. I think it will end up on a "to be built/still in box" Oriental.

There's a former Fox employee who bought out a part of Bearden's "Bear Products" before Bob died. He drove a Fox truck and tried to run the model part of the Fox Company for Betty Fox before Thacker, but just didn't know enough.

His last name is Lowry, and he is currently selling several kits of CL stunt type planes, including a plane very similar to the Aldrich Special and a Netzeband oddity that was published a couple of years ago and I can't remember the name for. So far, he doesn't have a web site, I don't believe, but he turns up at all of Tulsa's major model functions, so I met him there.

De, Elwyn, or Mitch, all regulars here, are from up there & one or another of them should wander into this thread before long with this man's eMail address at the very least (seems to me now that his first name might be John?)

Do a web site search here on SSW-F's main forum, for Aldrich Special, and read the other recent thread about the design a little more closely. Lowry's new kit was mentioned in that thread; maybe his eMail address has already been included in there.

P.S. I am fairly sure I remember seeing an eMail from Lowry in the SSW Classified Forum, so try a Search there for "Lowry". He was showing some interesting examples of his products at the last Tulsa contest; I haven't seen any Product Reviews so far, however.

Thanks Kiwi: I looked as well. I did get a response from a guy back east who is willing to sell me a copy of the plans and notes by GMA. I will scratch build it when I'm good enough. To have the full size plans is all I need for right now. Much to learn about choice of wood, coverings etc. Great sport this. Regards, William

Custom Models hasn't made CL kits in several years, Bill Hopkins has been concentrating on building GIANT scale RC projects.

John Lowry, who runs Bear products (out of Ark.) was supposed to make a kit of the profile Gieseke Nobler with a foam wing similar in construction to the Forerunner. I drew the plans for him a couple of years ago, but I don't know if he ever made the kits.

THanks Steve: I've found a copy of the plans and am going to look for someone to kit it. I simply don't have the skills yet, but soon.

I bought one of these ready built last year from Chulan at Modusa/Stalker. Stuck an LA40 in it and made my first stunt flights since 1968 on it! I was amazed, by my standards it's a very competant aircraft. What really surprised me was how easily it managed the vertical 8's without going behind my head, and that included opening out the manoeuvre, it was capable of using much less height. I say was -- unfortunately after about 20 flights the motor quit just as it was pointing up, recovering from inverted, at a line angle of about 30deg! It's reparable and will fly again.

Hey Rustler: Does this fellow whom sold you the ready built kit, sell other Profile Nobler kits assembled as well? As teaching tools for myself, I frequently buy a ready made kit, then having sometimes removed the covering, I can build one much the same, without the "wondering" and less mistakes. This in combination with teaching videos helps. Regards, William

Hi William. I guess I was just lucky, Chulan was having a turnout to reduce his inventory. I'm fairly sure he doesn't normally build to order. Chulan is the man who runs Modusa and markets the Stalker engines here in England.
