VSC 16 - The View Through a Camera Lens

Thought I would announce to everyone that my annual contribution to the stunt community is now complete. My video of VSC 16 is in production and will be shipping this week. For anyone interested in a copy, I'm charging $15.00 plus $3.85 priority shipping. I've also made a DVD version this year (DVD-R compatible) that is available for the same price.

This is a two hour summary tape that includes five Old time flights (Foster, Reeves, Wright, Berger, Shoup (Belfrey Bound)), the Friday night appearance judging, five classic flights (Werwage, Hunt, Whitely, Fancher and Oliver), and the first flight of George Aldrich's restored Nobler, Lew Woolard pilot (Dave Baxter's contribution to our history). It's always hard to decide what everyone would be interested in. This year I left out the Sunday flights in the wind. It was just too ugly. Besides the loss of several beautiful recreations was too sad to watch.

PS-I don't know. I think I would like to have seen Bob Smiley's 3.5 second/lap ARF Flight Streak flight.

I timed it from a video and it looked more like 4.25 seconds per lap. The wind-up in the maneuvers was impressive though!

I know my video does NTSC tapes - not so sure about the DVD though - we'll have to swap the DVD for a tape if it don't work!

Thought I would add a brief visual memorial to some beautiful models lost to the wind Sunday.

We are all grateful for the work that went into them and the opportunity we had to see them fly.

Thanks for the picture of my non surviving Tempest. In my case the crash may have been more mental than meteorological but who knows. The wife informed me on the way home that WE WILL be going again next year and "YOU WILL" get another one built, so another kit's on the way and a Brodak 40 for power rather than the mellow but overweight K & B the old one had.

The pilot and cockpit survived but he stuck a sign in the window saying "no Airbag-no fly". We're negotiating.

Bruce. I have your video of VSC 15. Although very well done, I think you have shorted the ordinary folk in preference to the "heros" flying Classic (you know, the top 10).

I have flown in the VSC for 15 of the 16 years. The number of times my planes (or my ugly self) have been shown in video or in print are few and far between.

Not to complain, because there are hundreds more just like myself who are pretty much in the background. But when it comes to videos and photos of VSC, it seems like images of the usual suspects dominate the pages of STUNT NEWS and the videos.

Additionally, at VSC, I think the banquet is the highlight of the entire event. We have, in one room at one time, many former world champs, Internats champs, Walker Cup champs, and beloved people who have contributed to stunt flying over the past 60 or more years. Yet, they do not seem to appear on any video..

I don't attend VSC to win trophies. My thrill is to once again say "hello" to my good friends and to those who I have admired over the years.

I recieved Bruce's latest video on Friday and have seen it several times since. I think it is the best of the three tapes I bought from Bruce so far! Certainly it is difficult to please everyone, and taping some of the top flyers is educational and entertaining. My only faulting comes from the appearence judging part of the video. We saw most of these planes in last years tape. I would have prefered to see interviews instead of planes much like last years interview feature with Larry S (spelling?) Digital video is sometimes confusing to me. Perhaps that is why some think I am mean spirited.
Now, as to my favorite part. Early on Larry Foster flys a great OTS pattern and at the end turns and THANKS the JUDGES! A Real Class effort. One by the way is not seen often.Another highlight..how can anyone not admire the flight of the Belfrey Bound ship. Thanks for this one Bruce it fits nicely into my new motto..."Never give up, Never surrender!"
I do have a question concerning the first flight on the tape. We see someone flying the OTS pattern and before each manuever raises his hand to let the judges know he is about to preform a manuever. Is this now required?
In closing, I highly reccomend this tape.

Raising a hand before each maneuver in OTS is neither required nor prohibited. For me, doing so would break my concentration on flying. The judges, because they are watching the airplane, might not see it in the first place; or, if they did, they might be distracted from watching the airplane and thus have difficulty properly scoring the maneuver. Anyway, I have enough difficulty just remembering to raise my hand to signal at the beginning of the flight.

Check your rule book for OTS. It is REQUIRED to raise a hand in order to make the flight an official. Otherwise, the judges will call it an attempt. The hand raising is not required for Classic or modern PAMPA/AMA because once you do the reverse wing-over, it is an official flight. In OTS it is required to raise the hand during level flight to make it official. I raise my hand for at least one lap, and the judges also acknowledge by raising their hands (although the flyer doesn't normally see that because he/she is busy keeping level flight).
