wall spackle?

Hey I saw on one one of the other boards that a suggestion was made to use wall spackle to fill in little dents in the balsa.
Will dope and paint stick to it?

I have used DAP latex spackle for years with good results. It dries fairly quickly with very little shrinkage and it is very easy to sand. If you try to hurry the drying process with a heat gun or something similar, then it will tend to shrink a little more. I use dope on my models, but have never had any problem with the dope sticking to it. A few times, I have used monocote over this type filler. The heat from the iron caused no problems.

If I have to use it on a corner or edge, I will sand it and then use thin CA to harden it. You can still sand it if you need to, but you are far less likely to knock or break it off the edge/corner.

Yeah.

The Red Devil lightweight spackle is very nice to work with, and I've hit no conflicts with any dope, paint or glues -- so far.

It is extremely soft when cured, so at least a few coats of dope, or one of 5-min epoxy wiped on are essential. Probably a good idea to paper, CF or glas over it to prevent marring.

Common painter supplies are quite a bit cheaper than the same thing packaged for the hobby, too.

I read on this post that puttin' water on the dent will draw it out and save some weight..If it already has dope on it you can prick it with a pin and do the same trick.. Gil;)
