Hi all. I recently posted for sale a NIB K&B r/c rear induction .40 ( series 67 Torpedo). I had no response. Now I'm thinking...how difficult would it be to convert this engine for c/l use given it's age (circa 1965-67)?

Thanks,

Chris

I've flown the front intake Series 67 Torp 40 with good results. One problem would be getting proper tank placement with the rear intake. Also, that was a racing engine so the rear intake is probably larger in choke area than you would want for stunt. Both these are solvable problems.

Jim - thanks for the reply. But HOW do I solve these problems? I can't find a taker for the engine; it does have some sentimental value; I'm not really interested in racing but i would like to use the thing! Oh yeah I'm completely ignorant of how to execute the fixes! Winter's coming, I could use another make work project! What do I do and how would I go about it?

TIA

Chris

As it is doubtful that the K&B would ever make a satisfactory stunt or sport engine, what about using it as is for it's intended purpose? See if you can come up with some Quickie Rat or similar plans, acquire or build a pressure tank, fill it with high nitro fuel, fire it up, tighten up your athletic supporter, and let her go. It will probably tend to come at you so sweep it off the ground while stepping backward.
By the way, I don't think it would be legal for the current quickie rat event but it would be a blast to fly a rat again

Forgot to mention-also wire the throttle open.

Chris,

Contact Leonard Neumann here at Stuka Stunt and get him to create a venturi for you with the intake size like the current K&B stunt. HE also has needle valves that will fit. Racing engines do not have the fuel draw you need for stunt.

You may also require a tongue muffler for it if your area requires mufflers.

Run it with a low pitch prop at high RPM. Perhaps a 10"x3" would be a good place to start. Experimentation by flying will determine the best prop for your plane/engine.

This should provide you a workable solution with minimal expense.

DO NOT try to do a 2-4 break. To do that would require sending it off to an engine reworker and have them alter the timing. If you alter it, you can never switch back to a racing engine if it doesn't work as a stunt engine.

Good luck with it,
George

If that K&B rear induction is anything like the one I use on my Satellite 1300, it is a honker and to try to make it into a stunt engine would be a waste of time and a great engine. Use it for racing or free flight. remove the r/c carb and put in a venturi for speed. Use 25% nitro and watch it go. If I had a need for another I would buy it.

Thanks for all the input guys. The consensus seems to be "don't monkey with the engine". So, into the box it goes until some future date.

I don't know that I'll ever really have the time become a serious PA flyer. "Sport" would probably best describe how I'd fit in. Do you fellas reccommend a particular engine?
