BTW, I didn't even have to doo any measuring. I knew it was a all synth fuel. So I just burned a small amount and rubbed the remaining oil between my fingers.

If it had any of the castor I use on it I'd have to wash my fingers with ethanol, no detergent I have at home dissolves that stuff.

So I know it's 16% oil, I just gotta add the castor.

I just found under the kitchen sink, in a well sealed dark bottle a quart off some good fuel, but I can't remember if I added castor to bring it up to 22%

I can run my engines on it, if they get ruined I didn't, if they survive I did.

But there gotta be a better way of checking the oil content of a bottle of fuel.

Yeah, it's called you take it to Mr. Lab and pay to have the analysis done. Once it's mixed- done deal unless YOU know and/or have notes as to what went in thar!

Ion, there is a fairly simple test to make, but you will have to sacrifice a moderately sized portion (can't get it into metrics for you, though). Measure an accurate "2 Ounces" (a volume you can have some feeling of accuracy with - it might have to be a metric equivalent of 4 Ounces) out into a fireproof container wider than it is tall and burn off the volatiles (light a match to the mix and the alcohol plus Nitro will burn off at too low of a heat to flash off even the least stable of synthetic oils).

Measure the volume of what's left. That's the oil. If it's now the equivalent of "1/2 Ounce" compared to the two you started with, you have fuel that is 25% oil. Now, with your past years living here, choose a starting point in milliliters that is a rough match, and run the test.

Yep I did a similar thing once.

Had some chemestry gear and could measure to 0.5 cc so tested 50 cc
in a test tube. Just immersed the test tube in hot water untill the fuel boiled off. Added a mist of armorall to stop it frothing all over the place. Worked a treat and is more accurate than just burning off the volatiles which doesn't remove it all.

Didn't Gary have some method involving a battery hydrometer? Sounds cheap.. beats me if it actually works..

Worst comes to worst:

1) Add some more oil and use it for sport flying. Too much oil won't hurt, will it?

2) Give it to some kids to use in 1/2-As.

3) Give it to some RC flier.

ION: Take the fuel can in your left hand, (Your right, if you are left-handed) Does the Equator affect such things? Take a magic marker or similar product in the other hand, and WRITE THE INFO ON THE CAN. Saves a lot of future agony. Sounds like your memory is getting like mine. Be well.
