Needed: Nylon Tanks with the Correct Capacity

All the nylon tanks that I have seen seem to be sized in 2 oz increments.

With the use of .40 engines in Classic and .40 ships that have the standard 2 inch inside fuselage width, the tank size goes from 4oz to 6 oz.

I have found that 4.5 oz is a perfect size for the .40's that I use. A 6 oz tank is just too large,and I haven't seen any 4 1/2 oz nylon tanks.

Does anyone make a 5 oz tank that will fit within the 2 inch dimension??

Has anyone "created" a proper size plastic tank?

The tanks you refer to are molded polyethylene. They can be heat welded. Guys here have taken two tanks and cut them apart and welded them back together so they can be the correct capacity. It works but can be a leak problem if not done correctly.

Why not just use a metal tank? The weight difference is really not very significant. The last experiment we did to compare came out only several grams of difference on a 7 oz tank.

I have been using metal tanks for 40 + years. Just looking to see if there are more options.

When the design offers a particularly long nose, there are some options on tank sources, other than the hobby arena. In the pharmacy, look on the shelves for some product you can find a use for, in the "economy" sizes, such as chewable antacid tablets.

Many over the counter drugstore items come in plastics that stand up to fuel quite well (the choices are much better in smaller sizes). We've used Suave Shampoo containers (22 Oz size) for in-the-pits filling of our syringes, and they work fine. But they don't handle Texas' summer heat as well, and can develop some odd shapes if left in the car's trunk for any length of time.

Likewise a 3oz plastic clunk tank would be ideal for the 20-25 sized engines. The only mfgr I've found who makes a 3oz is Kraft.

Sullivan made an "SS-3" model at one time. I have one here as I write this.

Wow, Maverick must have been in a real hurry.

He did take a few seconds to mention Tettra, and I get these tanks from Central Hobbies, a specialty supplier to the RC Pattern guys. A 3-ounce tank is part of the line, as are some other "odd" sizes.

The tooling must have broken for the Pylon 3-ounce tanks; they have not been available for many years.
