OS FP 60s

Has anyone tried the OS FP 60 in stunt mode?

Weigh the brick and then ask the question again. It is built and ported like a 35 FP, just a bunch bigger (and heavier). One could modify it and turn a...well, maybe 18 inch prop. But why? You can put a 4-stroke on and it will be lighter.

What does a PA 65, pipe, and header weigh? Who cares? I have 2 oz of lead under mine and it flies very well.

I say go for it. I thought about myself. Let me know if it works.

For the record, a pipe and header weigh 4 ounces. But then, you have a pipe and header. Also for the record, most people don't need it. but a PA 65 with a pipe and header is still lighter than an OS 60 FP with nothing. You could use a PA 61 or PA 65 with muffler, if you want, and save 3 1/2 of those 4 ounces. Of course, it is not inexpensive. But good ST 60's are going up in price. The Russian made engines are getting up there. So, what the 60 FP has going for it is price. That only.

But it is not out of the Box. And my 18 inch prop suggestion was (I have never reworked one) a bit of an exaggeration. I hoped you would catch that. Stock, I am not sure how it would work. Even the RC guys are avoiding it. And the LA 65 gets even heavier with poorer quality.

Now, the 91 Saito (4-stroke) is lighter than the 60 FP. It CAN be run out of the box (although Windy added a throttle which adds weight, cost, and complexity). If all you want to do is make a double span Flite Streak and put the 60 FP on for clowning around, well, maybe. But if you are looking at something for serious stunt (even Beginner or Intermediate) there are a lot better, cheaper, lighter engines available. I am just trying to look at this thing is a practical way. The last (and only) person I know of who bought one for stunt got rid of it in a hurry.

I was told that the bare engine weighs around 18 oz and vibrates like mad. Not a good start. Steve

These motors are for entry level RC flying. That means "crashing" They are built to take beating. A physical beating from smashing into the gound. They can take it. Then once the pilot is good enough and confident then it is time to move on to something much more powerfull. I looked at the (la 60?) I think it is a 60. Wow they could have made that a 91 easy with room to spare. But as far as 60s that can take a runway beating these are the ticket for new rc flyers in the 60 size models. I just wish they would make a 60/65la series like they did the 46. A tiny case with huge bore short stroke and no boost port with no weight. Wow that would be rad. Every stunt grunt would have one for 89 bucks just because it works and it is cheap. I have heard that Kaz was thinking of building his next FAI ship for an LA 46. After the one I ran I have no doubt he can do well with it for a fraction of the cost.

Just wondered. I never had occasion to fool with one when flying R/C-had boxes full of OS FSRs, Webras, OPSs and the like. No wonder I have never seen one at the flying field in any form...
