Idle minds read the AMA rulebook. Sorry about that! Page 31, AMA rulebook--Contol Line General #8. Model Limitations. ". . .no Control Line model shall have a flying weight of more than four (4) pounds." That's 64 oz with fuel. I don't see anyplace in the PA rules where a heavier model is allowed.

On page 50 of the GREEN rule book, at the bottom, after the chart on line length/size, is the phrase "There is no maximum model weight."

I spent some time in the AMA library checking rule books to see when it was added and if there was a rule change proposal....to no avail.

A 64 oz. limit would sure put the whammy on a bunch of guys.

If by GREEN, you mean the current official rules, then yes. Same in the .PDF version, as well.

I'm sure you would agree that a 64 oz limit would not be in the interest of the event, any more than misinterpreting the line material ASTM requirements for speed as applying to stunt, and several other red herrings that have been posited over the years.

I agree that 64 oz. is a bit "tight", especially in light of the proposed (?) limits in FAI and as put forward by Keith as an official rule change.

I am still curious as to how the wording was added to the book, and if there was a rule change.

Rich, The weight change came into effect in the 1978/79 issue of the Competition rule book. It was put at the bottom of the pull test/line diameter chart. In the previous issue of the competition rule book, there was no mention of there being NO LIMIT on weight.
There were several changes to BOTH issues of those two issues of the rule book, so it is very possible that it was included in some of the other sweeping changes. If anyone is rabid enough to try to persue it further, they might try contacting some of the district control line contest rules commitee members or contest board members of that era. Many of them kept copies of the proposals and other records.

So that means my NEW 66oz 4-stroke powered PAMPA plane is not permitted to fly at the NATS??!?!?!??

Didn't Bob Baron fly a 72 oz plane AND WIN the NATS once upon a time???

Guess I'll put a larger tank in my Fox powered "El Diablo" so I can do the whole pattern.......

It's perfectly legal - read the other responses. There is no weight limit for stunt planes, so you are OK.
