VSC "MOST FUN AWARD" by Tom Lay

I gave the VSC 2004 "Most Fun Award" to Carl Shoup. Not because he was having fun flying from his wheelchair, but because many people clapped everytime he flew, and he brought a great amount of FUN to the spectators, and fellow flyers.
He was flying Dale Kirn's "Belfry Bound" design, from a wheelchair, in competition. I decided anyone who would do that, was either a Very Dedicated stunt flyer, or he had "Bats in his Belfry!!

That is a tough act to follow. He gets my vote as well. He can darn sure build a pretty model too.

Carl: I typed Belfrey on the Stuka Stunt posting, and the spelling didn't look right, so I called Pyatt and got the Belfry from him. OOPS!

Tommie. All of us watching Carl fly from his wheelchair were greatly impressed. Even though I am old and broken down, and deserving of some sort of award for my advanced age, you picked the right person!

Bruce Hunt has advertised a tape or DVD of this year's VSC. The scene described above is worth the price of the entire tape. I was really engrossed with the flight,particularly when it sounded like the engine was failing. As I mentioned in another thread, I have a still picture of the flight with the caption "Never Give Up, Never Surrender"! printed underneath.
Nothing but Kudos on this.

Personally, I thought flying while using crutches would have been a lot more entertaining in every way.

In any case, Mr. Shoup was exceedingly lucky in that I was not around to set the mixture to WFO running. In fact, I am wondering how it was that Tom didn't do the same thing.

Did I read your message wrong? Carl Shoup flew OTS from a wheelchair. There was anoher contestant (can't remember the name) who flew OTS while using a cane. That was also admirable, although I understand the judges disqualified his flight because there was no hand signal for an official!! Really!
