Just got me a $2.00 crock pot at Goodwill. Question is, do you use the anti-freeze solution full strength, or diluted with water?

I mix mine 50/50 with water. Either the old hazardious Ethylene Glycol OR the newer Sierra environmentally frendly Proptlene Glycol works equally well.
With either, I would NEVER use the crock pot for food stuffs ever again. I set mine on low temp (about 140 degrees and just let it cook over night. Fish the parts out and rinse them in warm water while lightly brushing them with a tooth brush. Dry them off and then rinse in alcohol or acetone and dry and assemble, lightly oiling as you go. Run the engine after assembly, or else heavily oil with after run oil.

Well that is good, because I just noticed that the anti-freeze I bought is ready to use 50/50 mix.

You might also want to run thin fishing line through your motor parts, and out the side of the crock so you can pull it all out as one unit. Paul

Good idea, but I appropriated a stainless steel strainer basket from my wife's kitchen. She doesn't know about it yet, and I am not going to tell her.

Yeah, well you had better either tell her or make sure she never finds it again and uses it for cooking.

I don't know what the symptoms of antifreeze poisoning are, but I don't what to find out by reading this forum.

I'll make sure she never gets it back.

Mostly the same as methanol (wood alchohol) poisoning - blindness and liver damage. The antidote would be puking/stomach pumping (if you got to it quick enough) followed by Ethyl alcohol (Absolut vodka, among others) and/or dialysis.

People have been known to drink this on purpose as a substitute for other alcoholic beverages, with the expected results. I've seen people drink this (not me!) and they are still with us, and, unfortunately, lived long enough to reproduce, thus defeating Darwin again. They were in the shallow end of the gene pool in any case.

I don't want to understate the problem, but it's not all that dangerous in small amounts to adults. It's quite soluble in water, and if you wash utentsils that have contacted antifreeze there's no reason to think that they are permanently tainted. There are certainly many other modeling substances that are more dangerous - dope being the most obvious.

That's right, ethanol is absorbed faster than methanol and it'll block all your receptors.

Does that mean that when a guy is feeling no pain he is imune to methanol?

Hey, thats a good excuse to show up at home loaded!

"Honey, I had an acident with methanol, but fortunately my buddies were fast to administer the antidote...."

When I was living in Helsinki I heard stories of cats drinking radiator anti-freeze, but I never really believed in such reports. Now you're telling the same thing, I guess a man can go that low...

I've seen people drink this (not me!)

You got me fooled, Brett!

Not really, Brett, you aren't taking in account the environment, i.e. civilization and moral values.

Otherwise that dude Stephen Hawkins would be a goner a long time ago.

Lead can be quite unhealthy also. I used to melt it in a small pan and pour it into small moulds to make wingtip wheights.

But THAT pan in particular I never used for any food related activities!

While, I have never tasted it, ethylene-glycol apparently has a sweet taste, and occasionally some unscrupulous people will try to use it as a sweetener in food or drink. A few years ago, some German made wine was recalled because it contained ethylene-glycol "sweetener",MMMM-MMMM good.

Yes, animals SEEK the smell and taste of anti-freeze. Our vet here has done research with dogs and cats who are brought in with certain symptoms. Apparently, it is irresistable to them. A few drops WILL cause severe damage to a cat. A little more for a dog. Kidney failure is the first danger to be addressed in vet emergency concerning anti-freeze. Also, in a recent large truck fire here in Santa Fe, when the anti-freeze gets hot enough, it WILL burn! I didn't know that until I saw it up close.

Anti Freeze will kill you as surely as a bullet. When I was living in St. Louis, a nurse in St. Charles was arrested for killing three of her husbands. It even made the Discovery Channel series on solved murders!! Seems she put three or four drops of antifreeze in their beer each night. The glycol or glycerine makes the sweet taste, and in fact is used in candy, glycerine, NOT Glycol. The last husband survived and a Dr got suspicious of the mans syptoms and had his kidneys checked and a more thorough blood test. He found the poison in the mans system. He told the sheriff and the two other husbands were disinterned and autopsys performed. First husband had been creamated. Any way she is now in prison. On the note about animals drinking the stuff, right on. When I was working as a Diesel mech for a company in St. Louis, we spilled some antifreeze on the asphalt. It stayed in a small puddle for a few days and a local coyote would come by each morning, about 6:30 am, and drink this liquid from the puddle. After a week, no more coyote. We were in an area called "Gumbo" SW of St. Louis near the Spirit of St. Louis airport, way out there.
