Goldberg Li'l Satan

I have been involved in an Ebay bid for a NIB Li'l Satan kit, it was still in the cellaphane wrapper I bid up to $40.00 for it (way too much) someone bought it for $81.00 !!!!.
So if anyone is short of things to do make a small run of Li'l Satans!

I have just sold a nitro racing boat hull – I reckoned I would get about £30 for it and it went for £82 !! – I felt guilty taking the guys money !

Also saw a sale end at £20 for a camping bed that the seller was selling more of, on his normal company website, for £10 !!

A couple of years ago, for several months, an eBay seller was building new Lil' Satans up for resale. I'd have bet that he had his own version as a "kit" that he was building from. That was near the end of my major period of watching that place, but I sorta think that whoever it was is now doing something else, or I'd try a search on eBay right now to give you a lead.

There has been a Lil' Satan looking kit showing up there even lately.

Ebay is sorta like the Stock Market or Gambling. I have been keeping records on lots of different items for over 3 years the cheapest Li'l Satan kit sold 1st week of Sept 2002 for $9.81 about 2 years ago. If you want to buy an item decide how much your willing to pay, place your bid then forget about it. If you don't win the auction there will be an identical auction soon, keep watching and waiting.

You can scratch build the Li'l Satan from plans. Barry Baxter has plans at http://www.controllineplans.com/frameset2.htm he calls it Jr. Satan picture is identical to the pic on the kit box.

The Jr. Satan is a 15 size, and the Lil' Satan is .049.
I couldn't find the .049 size (Lil' Satan) on Bare's site.

I saw that L'il Satan as well.... 'believe it was still in the original shrink wrap. The wrap is the clue to the high dollar amount. (?)

I have an image in mind that there are way excentric collectors with rooms in their homes that look exactly like old hobby shops with glass cases, every display, and product from a given era and a cash register. And, the stuff has been collected at "what every it costs" to get an entire line of kits by a given mfg.....etc.

Anyone seem a similar "rec room"???

'could be a theme for those bozos on "Monster House".... need an unrealistic deadline and sloppy tradesmen and drama to make it "good TV" of course.......just a thought....

Hey Bazzer, try this, it worked for me.

In the classifieds here on SSW I put a request for a Lil' Jumpin' Bean kit NOT collector quality, I am going to build it.

I had a number of reponses but ended up with an assembly sheet from one guy and a kit in a bashed up box without the sheet from another, all free. Great guys here. Don't know if you'll get a deal like I did, but lots of guys have "worthless" stuff laying around looking for a place to go. In fact I have the assembly sheet for a Lil' Satan if you'd like a copy.

I was not really looking for a pristine kit I just wanted the plan and maybe some of the wood parts to copy, I would be quite capable of making the Li'l Satan just from the plan, I was totally shocked when the kit went for $81.00

Are the assembly instructions for the Li'l Satan a 2/3 size plan with notes and the full size rib spacing along the bottom edge, this is how the Jr Satan is, I got my Jr Satan off the bay for about $15.00, part complete kit but all the parts required to make some copies, in fact tonight I am going to scan the ribs and then convert that scan to an Autocad DXF to get a bunch of ribs CNC cut, maybe we could do the same for the Li'l Satan, if you could lend me the plan/assembly instructions I will give you a set of the wood parts back plus your plan, how about it?

My comments were not complaints, they were suggestions. I gathered you were looking for a kit to build. I see now that someone has come forward with plans. See what I mean, these guys are great! If you still need the assembly sheet let me know, a copy will be in the mail imediately.

I would be very interested in a set of full size plans for "Li'l Satan" I saved my COX engines from when I was a kid and just discovered I am still a kid. I whant to go to the park and fly a li'l satan.

I always knew I was a kid, only trouble is I did not keep the engines, I am hoping that CR will send me some plans to work into something that can be distributed and easy to get a set of ribs cut for.

I am close to getting a small batch (six sets) of Jr Satan parts CNC cut, the Li'l Satan will go the same way, just having a little problem getting hold of some Black Widows and Golden Bees, will have to check Ebay again.

A couple of years ago RJBOB, The Old Sourdough, and myself, we ended up with these Lil Satan's off ebay And since then I cloned these kits for my self and friends 3 at a time in an evening. I do have a set of plans and templates and if you want a set of plans email me your address and I'll be glad to send a copy to you. The monocoted ones I cloned. They fly great on 35 foot lines.

I'll get it off to you in the next few days. I fly mine with Golden Bee's, Blackwidows, and Tee Dee's. I even fly them with Babe Bee's, Just shorter flites. They don't even seem to lose fuel when upsidedown either. I have no idea what they would do with a Norvel on it.

I could only imagine what a BIG OTTO would do with a fine tuned norvel on 45 foot lines!! Paul

Some sleepless nights, I go onto the computer and sometimes for fun, eBay and cruise the ST sites. Last month a "Buy It Now" ad came on for a NIB ST G-15 RISE. Pictures looked great. 50 bucks US! I have it next to my computer right now. The exact same kind engine sold yesterday for over 300!? Most times, the bidders are "new" and bid against other "new" bidders and drive the prices way out of? I've seen guys just retired or returning to the sport, bid crazily on kits, just to have one. Best to have a Stunt pro kit the specific, with hand picked new woods, etc. Regards, William

Just to see what happens, I put one of these, new in box, up on the bay. What do you wanna bet it doesn't even reach 20 bucks. Trying to predict what happens on ebay is like teaching pigs to fly. You never know what might happen.

My local hobby shop has atleast 2 possible 3 of the LIL SATANS in stock. I go there a couple times a month. They have been there for years. E_MAIL me at [email protected] I will pick it up and send to you.

I'm always amazed at the responses to CG models. The Lil Satan was really not a complex thing and more then one knockoff was made.
I had one kit and never built it, I sold it for $25.00, but had build a lot of similar planes from plans and my imagination.
If Walter Umland would sell plans he has the Combat Puppies from his Golden State Models purchase and Phil Carter sells the Lil Hacker at 2 for about $25.00.
Somehow I find the effort of having laser cut parts etc for a 1/2A or 15 sized combat ship to be a little overboard. Of course it's a hobby and everyone is entitled to go as far overboard as they wish, but for me a cad plan and laser cut Lil Satan parts are a little much.

I address this problem in my new book Flying Model Collectibles. I have included "Notable eBay auctions", listing over 600 of the best and rarest items to be found and the prices they sold for just to highlight what you can expect while playing the eBay game. I to have sold items that I thought were worth $5 for huge sums of money. The Carl Goldberg kits are picking up steam as collectibles. The Jr. Falcon and 1/2A Skylane go for about $100 regularly. These kits sold for $3.95 originally. Another CG kit that brings in the dollars is the P-40 rc/cl .19-35 kit, I have seen it go for $80-160. There are a couple of other kits that seem to be highly desired, the VooDoo and Ranger 30 ($88) can you believe that, the Ranger 30 sold for $1.95. Please do not bid on kits you want to build, plans are availible for just about everything a guy wants to build for $10 and under. The thing that gets me on eBay is coping plans at Kinkos and then selling them. I guess I can can just look at this as a service and not an auction. Patience is paramont when buying, just wait long enough and the more common items will come along again. The Lil' Satan has about $2 worth of wood in the kit and the rest of the wood can be had from scraps saved, I save too many scraps and have to thin them out every once in a while and a small airplane is a good way to do this. There seems to be many people on eBay with more money than smarts. However, good deals are still out there, never quit. Jim J

company ( I think Kiwi said Lainer ?)
Anyway....Brodak picked up the control line dies
and will be coming out with some of the old Goldberg
line. I e-mail John Brodak once and he replied that Li'l Satan
was one of them. Since the ARF craze it looks like the Goldberg
reissues are on the back burner.

I hope Brodak reissues some of the Goldberg models, there are some issues with the die cutting on the Jr Satan that I am redrawing in AutoCad now, the ribs dont match the plan and the centre section ribs are a different airfoil section to the outer ribs (I dont mean the allowence for the centre section sheeting)but I am sure Brodak will look at these things.

CR is kindly sending me the plans for the Li'l Satan and I am going to redraw that in AutoCad, this will allow the parts to be cut out either by CNC router, Lazer or good old hand (with the chainsaw!)

I have some mixed feelings about ebay. I have sold a couple of non-model airplane items on ebay and it worked out great because you get the items out there for thousands of people to see and more than likely you will run onto someone who is interested in what you have to sell. The real bummer for me has been with the model airplane stuff. I used to go the R/C swap meets and pick up nice, in new condition C/L kits and engines for next to nothing and the R/C guys were more than happy to be rid of the stuff. Now everyone just sells on ebay and they get top dollar for kits that weren't that good to begin with. I bid on a Como 40 a couple of years ago that went for well over $100.00. I stopped bidding at $40.00 because I figured why buy a used, twenty some + year old engine when you can buy a new Brodak 40 for $100.00 or a OS LA 40 or 46 for about $70.00. It blows my mind every time I see a Sig Chipmunk or one of the Brodak kits go for $20.00 to $40.00 dollars more on ebay than I can go to the LHS today and buy it for brand new in plastic wrap and all.

I may be guilty of upping the prices on some items, I bought my TD off of the Bay for about $33.00 , now being as how I live in England and the dollar changes with the pound at about $1.80 to £1.00 that made the TD cost me £18.50 a new TD is £61.00 in England and Designman reliably informs us that the new engines are not as good as the older ones, so I am real happy with that purchase.
What I am not happy with is the price of Dynajets on the bay they are going for 75% of the new price, and more than the Bailey and Jetbill engines.
