LA46- ST51?

Hello people.This may have been discussed before but I cannot find it.I was wondering what the new ST 51 and the LA 46 stunt compare to each other like.I am looking at a Sig Magnum & Brodak Legacy plane.I was wondering which would be the better stunt motor without sending out for rework.All I want to do is put a good tongue muffler or tube muffler (maybe a Macs) on it and try a few good props to see what works best ect.Has anyone got some time on the new Super Tiger 51 stunt.I know that there is some people that have bought them but I would like to here from those that have flown them.Thanks For any help.

As much as I like my LA 46, I don't think I would be happy with it on my Legacy. Maybe if you kept it in the 55 oz range, but I really think 687 squares needs a 60 size engine to perform satisfactorily. I may be REALLY wrong on this, and I hope someone else will jump in. I'm just afraid that, even if it seemed OK in calm air, it would really poop out in the wind. Mine runs a .61 on a tube muffler, and flys pretty good, except when it has a 55 mph collision with Steve Millet's right arm...(yes, it was rebuilt).

What was rebuilt the plane or the Arm! OUCH.

Thank goodness, the plane! Could have been much worse!

ST-51 by far

I initially powered my 60 oz Legacy with a ST V case 51 and would say that it flew it but that is about all. The V case ST 60 which is a drop in turned it into an outstanding airplane. The modern 51 might be stronger but doubt it would be as well suited as the ST 60. I doubt the LA 46 would allow it to do much other than fly level or maybe do some big loops in favorable conditions.

The ST 51 hands down. I used one in my SV 11 which was 64 oz. It flew the plane with no problems, even in some pretty windy conditions.
On my 54 oz USA-1 it was like having a turbo diesel Cummings up front.
And yes I have a few ST 60s, T&L and Big Jim ones. MUCH more power than the LA 46.

I have a St 51 in my Colossus which is 720sq.the new 51 puts out more power than a ST 60.Go with the New ST 51,no Contest.

I have both an LA .46 and a ST .51

I have had the ST .51 in a 59 ounce Magnum and a 58 ounce Shark .45. The ST .51 by Tom Lay is hands down easily 30% more powerful than the LA .46. My recommendation is that the ST .51 is most useable in planes from 650-750 Sq. In. and 55 - 65 ounces. The LA .46 would be great in some of the larger classic planes, i.e., Thunderbird, Nakki, Warden Continental, ect. Or you can design your own plane for the LA .46. I think that last year's Advanced winner at Brodak's - the Mr. Happy, used one - right Clayton? I am going to use one of my LA .46's in a 59 Thunderbird. They are both great engines in the right class of airplane. The LA .46 use in 510-630 Sq. In. and 42 - 54 ounces. Hopefully this is helpful and Len can set up archives for this type of information.

I just started my Legacy and I plan on using the Tigre 51. However, I will be sending mine to the Tom Lay for the Layster treatment.

Thanks everyone ,it appears the ST51 is the way to go.I just ordered one from Great Hobbies.They matched Towers price.Thanks again for the help as I have never seen a ST 51 except pictures.What is a good tongue or tube muffler for the ST 51 (make and model).Thanks again .Dennis

While you should have simply bought the complete engine, plus rework, from Tom Lay, at the very least check to see that you've got .003 to .004 end gap on the ring. Common problem, at least it was in the past.

When you break the ring getting it reinstalled, think kindly of me and my advice.

I used Big Art tube mufflers on both my ST 51s, although I think Gordan uses a tongue muffler.

Hello Dan with my dainty fingers never!They are only slightly hammer beaten.I would love to be able to do something like that but they just like to nail us with taxes ect whenever I try to get something out of the US.Then places like Great Planes and Tower that well sent freight pre paid to a US customer want a flat fee of 17.50 US shipping for any small package to Canada.Tower wanted it for a Tower 40 back plate and GPlanes wanted it for a small canopy?It is really bad if it is sent UPS they want broker fees ect and it with taxes ect can double the cost of the product.If this new motor works out great and if it does not I may try a TL motor and see if someone going down to the worlds can pick it up for me!Thanks I well see if I can get a tube muffler as you recommend.I think Ken Clapson in Calgary has them.Dennis

Yes,it is stock.But,I did add a head gasket and used my own venturi.I use a sprinkler type with four holes in it.It`s like the old st46 and 35 venturi`s. It works great.
