I've just received a copy of the November 1964 edition of the UK magazine Aeromodeller that I bought on that international web based auction site.

Page 562 has a dimensioned drawing of the Goldberg Jr. Satan model under the heading "First U.S. Kit for International Combat Class".
(See below!)

I've scanned it at a fine resolution and "embedded" it in an Autocad drawing file at full size. It prints out with pretty good detail. I should be able to email this. It occured to me in the discussion of the 0.049 size Satan, that this drawing could be scaled to a suitable size for smaller motors.

Could I take you up on the offer of an email copy of the Jr Satan plan, I am redrawing the Jr Satan at the moment as an AutoCad drawing, I have just about got the side view done, your plan would make a useful reference.

I am drawing the Satan out as a proper cad file so as to be able to get a few sets of ribs CNC cut.

My email is [email protected]

Many Thanks Barrie

darn didnt know the jnr Satan was so popular I still have a untouched one in the box maybe I should put it on e-bay only problem with the kit is it don't have a full size plan for me to copy prior to selling it, I flew the jr Satan with quite alot of success back in the heyday of combat flying in England and always got strange looks when I got them out of the car and set them up when everyone else was useing the normal for those days Liquidators, Razor blades and the like etc., only mod I made to the model was to reshape the booms and make them stronger which also helped get the balance point back to what it should have been as it was designed for a cox and I was useing Oliver tiger diesels of course ( the only motor to use for combat then).

Yes if you are tired of looking at your kit get it on Ebay, there are some very silly prices being paid for old kits, take this example which being as how you know the English CL scene you will remember well ebay item 3186917913

A Phantom for £51.00 unreal!!!

The item was won for GBP 77.00 with another 6.00 for shipping. You could use paypal but that was another 4%. A little steep, no?

Ah, another Autocad Jock! Looking forward to the completed result...

Come to think of it, I'd appreciate a copy of the scanned version too...

Thanks!

Yes I am doing it on CAD because I am going to make a few semi kits up so as that a couple of my friends and I can have a bit of fun thinking that we are combat pilots.

I will have the ribs and ply parts cut out by CNC router, the quote I got for doing the ribs (5 sets) was very resonable, so I will do all of the other parts whilst I am at it. Same goes for Li'L Satan when I get the plan.

Andy,
Concerning the scaned version.
I've uploaded it onto a web page. It's a self extracting Autocad archived file with an exe extension so some mail systems will treat it with extreme caution!

try: http://www.angelfire.com/journal2/clasnsw/jnrsatan.exe

You should be able to download it ok from there!

Well, sort of. I get an Autocad file with an empty frame, and a separate JPEG file which does indeed look like the Junior Satan, and prints nicely from a photo program. No luck importing it back into the Autocad drawing though...

Andy

Edit: I was able to import the JPEG fine into a new drawing, and scale it to get the correct size by setting the stablilzer to 7.75" length.

Thanks,

AT

I had the same problem as Andy, I read the txt file with your comments and I made sure that the JPG was in the same directory as the DWG which is what the txt file asked for, I am interested to find out what is going on because I dont like being defeated by this kind of problem.

My technique is to scan the plans, and then run the resulting bitmap through Corel Trace to give me a vector file (dxf),I then open this in AutoCad and check some reference dimensions, I then scale the objects based upon what I have seen from the reference dimensions, this enables me to create new geometry by snapping to the vectors produced from the scan. With a little practise I can get very accurate results, a couple of years ago I copied an F1 car wing from a paper drawing this way the results are still being used to this day (and very successfully).

I will let you have a copy of the DWG when it is finished.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Barrie,

things never seem to go smoothly in exchanging Autocad files! It worked fine on a couple of test runs my two Autocad copies! I do work in metric and it was scaled thus. This may explain the other gents experience. Anyway glad to hear that you have it at last.

Barrie,

I'm interested in this bitmap to vector program, "Corel Trace".
Is this a special package or part of Coreldraw? Last time I seriously looked (about 10 years ago), this type of conversion was less than effective. Have they improved? If so it should be very useful in converting old magazine plans to useful full size drawing.

Love to have a copy of your finished drawing.

Raster to vector conversion is an interesting subject, Corel Trace is installed when you do the full installation, it is no better than any other cheap raster/vector convertors such as Scan2Cad which I tested.

My local Autodesk reseller have conversion programs which do a little better on big jobs (A0 plans etc). I am basically using the vectorised scan as a set of snap points to create new geometry and for this it works very well, particulary good for reverse engineering airfoil sections and irregular curves.

I may try and send you the partially completed file so as you can see the process, but the file is very large whilst it still contains the vectorised scan (many thousands of entities)once the scan layer is deleted everything is normal, what version of Autocad are you using?

Barrie,

I'm using Autocad 2002, can't see any reason to update right now!
I'll love to see the partial drawing. My [email protected]
account has no size limit, the other one has!

Just to clear up a point about the jr satan plan. Do you normally work in metric or imperial?

Ray

I always work in metric, but for the first time I have worked in Imperial (fractions as well) because it seemed like a bit of fun and the original model uses very obvious fractional measurements.

I checked the file sizes this morning, the new plan excluding the scan data is 79Kb so far which includes all of the side veiw data and the plan veiw of the stab, so main plan veiw still to complete. The same but with the vectorised scan is 7.5Mb, is that OK to send ?

Barrie,

7.5 meg should be ok!
