If anyone could answer some questions about these Veco ball bearing 19's I sure would appreciate it.

http://groups.msn.com/NorfolkAeromodelers/veco19s.msnw

Engine A was obtained without a prop washer or nut. It has a keyed shaft and drive washer. Filing some mild steel coat hanger wire made a key. I found a washer and nut in my parts bin. The engine works fine now. Engine B also runs fine, but does not have the keyed drive washer. Engine C was bought at a recent swap meet and needs a con rod, drive washer, washer, venturi insert, NVA and the two small round devices that fit in both sides of the exhaust. I'm certain I can take care of all parts except the drive washer and the con rod. Engine C was a R/C engine that I want to convert for C/L. The last pic is a shot of all three.

Questions:

1. Why is the R/C engine the only one with a serial number?

2. Where might I obtain a drive washer and con rod for engine C?

3. Is there any other difference between A & B other than the drive shaft?

4. I've searched for information on this engine and haven't come up with much. Can you point me to a source?

5. Is the timing on the R/C the same as the Control Line?

6. What is the proper proceedure for removing and inserting the driveshaft and bearings?

7. These engines are not for sale, but can anyone give me a ballpark value on them? I don't want to spend more fixing one than the cost for a new/used one.

I know this is asking a lot but I sincerely thank you in advance for any help. I plan to use two of the engines in a push-pull dual engine model.

Tom,

You need to get in touch with Frank Bowman. His email address is [email protected] He has most of the NOS K&B Veco .19 parts. He is quite knowledgable about the history of the Veco .19. He should be able to answer all your questions.

I have two with the "keyed shaft", that was the original way Veco did them.

It has a split cone that the drive washer presses on to. The split cone set up will work on the keyed shaft, too.

The Original Veco BB 19 had a specific crank case for the C/L version, it was exactly the same except it didn't have the holes that the little shiney pieces that go where the exhaust baffle fit. I have one, and a later (K&B) that does. The external shape of the head also was different.

Might be when K&B took over production. My original Veco's do not have serial #s.

I would go with Frank Bowman, too.

None I that I could find on mine.

Good Luck! Don't know of any

>5. Is the timing on the R/C the same as the Control Line?

Again, I have never found a difference internally on the R/C or the C/L.

>the driveshaft and bearings?

I modified a battery terminal puller to pull the drive washer, then they come apart pretty easy. I set mine on a pan, on the rear opening, in the oven then turn it on about 400*. You can hear the crank drop.

Hard call. I think I gave $35 recently for a near new one.

I really like the Veco 19 in planes like the Ringmaster, Sterling Yak, and Mustang, Super Clown, Flight Streak, etc., not to mention the Lil' T-Bird, so I am prejudiced!!

Good Luck, I know Frank can help you.

Thanks for the replies. Since I left the message I've obtained a "parts engine" that has a good con rod in it. Now my problem is after putting a new plug in the new engine it runs just as good as the other two, and has a functioning carb to boot. Darn life is hard ain't it? Also thanks to kiwi for the private response.

I'm going scratch build Walt Williamson's Which A Way and use two of them in a push pull multi setup. I recently built the wings out of an old double Demon kit and stuck em in a profile fuselage. I think I'll try them with the 19's I was pleasantly surprised at the power of the engines with a mild fuel.
