OKC FIELD DIRECTIONS

Is there anyone from the OKC club that can give me directions to the field from the I-40 council exit as im gonna be in the area and just might get time to put in a flight or so i hope lol

Continue east and get on I-44 going toward Tulsa. Take the I-235 exit south to OKC..(the first one.) Stay right and exit onto 50th street. The entrance to Topping Park is on the off ramp. If you miss...you'll need to shoot the whole approach over! Call me at 672-1867.....there are a few published approaches.

Ray pretty much nailed it. I would add for others planning to attend that you must be going SOUTHBOUND on I 235 to get on the correct exit ramp. If you take the 50th street exit off I 235, you will not get to the park and will possibly never be heard from again.

Ya the first time I came over from Tulsa I found myself going the wrong way on the interstate. I could see the darn park but it took me 15 or 20 min of driving around city streets to get back on the interstate so I could get to it. Great group, sorry I won't be making it this time. It is looking like I may miss several of our normal weekend outings this year

Correction: I should have said if you take the 50th street exit from the NOrthbound lane you will likely disappear. 50th street is the correct exit from the SOUTHBOUND lane-you will see the park and field about halfway around the loop to your left-be careful and don't overshoot.
If you overshoot and wind up on 50th street and go West on 50th, you will wind up dead ending. If you go East on 50th, well don't go East on 50th unless you are in an armoured vehicle.

I haven't lived in OKC for 20 years, but I see some things haven't changed a bit.

Yep, the Northeast side remains bad, the Southwest side is gang territory(mostly hispanic). Unfotunately, many or all of the apartments that were built on the North side have gone low income and that area is rabidly going down the toilet. NW 122nd and Penn being about the worst-actually it's pretty much a free fire zone after dark.

As the suburban school systems have prospered in tax base and enrollment the OKC system is in a death spiral with a declining tax base, poor student test results,falling enrollment, and failure of all "revenue enhancement"(tax hikes) measures at the polls. The 30 year old court mandated busing order was lifted a few years ago with the idea of returning to neighborhood schools which still didn't help. In fact, neighborhoods probably no longer want a school anywhere around them.

well i was hoping to get to drive to okc but im gonna have to ride the stupid bus i have orentation with swift trans my new job but my truck has a vibration from hell that i cant figure out where it is for sure i am thinking from the tranny (just my luck) i changed the carrier bearing today and it just made it worse and the u-joints all are good and tight well maybe it wont be the tranny but its just gonna have to wait till i can afford to have a mech look at it

Huh...122 & Penn used to be kinda upscale, isn't that out toward Quail Springs? I grew up on the far West side, Bethany in fact. (Don't know exactly what this has to do with modeling, but I'm sure we can find a tie-in somehow...)

The modeling tie in is that a CL contest, or maybe it was a combined RC,FF, and CL contest was once held where Quail Sprngs mall now sits.

All the nice apartments that were all along Penn and even the East side of May Ave. went low income. That basically means that the taxpayers subsidize the rent big time for "qualified" individuals. Apparently it helps to qualify if you are a minority, have a bunch of kids or are an illegal alien. Anyway, the low income folks moved in, the other folks moved out, and the natural result was crime, gangs, drugs, drive by shootings, etc. The Camelot housing addition may be becoming infested itself. West of May Ave. the Quail creek addition is apparently holding its own as are the apartments and townhomes around Quail creek that have not gone the low income route.

In Bethany, the only bad areas are the apartment rows along NW10th and NW 16th. I think these areas are in the OKC school district(Western Heights) rather than Bethany schools.

Yup, when I was a kid Bethany ended at 23rd on the south, probably 50th or thereabouts on the north, Council on the west and MacArthur (or closer) on the east. I lived on what is now Rockwell Ave. (back then, West Ave., then Northwest Ave., finally Rockwell). A 7-11 now sits where our house used to be (about 34th, west side). We had an acre, used to fly 1/2A's in the front yard (27' lines) and bigger ships in the back (maybe 50' lines). Not much clearance, you couldn't wander; my brother dead-centered his Flying Clown on a dead Elm tree stump. It stuck, crankshaft about an inch into the wood. Pretty funny.
