Engine test session!

I can't run engines where I live - too built up.

I've found a good secluded place on the canal about 15 mins walk.

I intend having an 'engine test session' soon - was going today but it's rather wet here!

I want to run the following motors - all second hand:

Elfin 2.49
Frog 2.49
Rivers 3.5
AM 35
Taipan 15 (glow)
Norvel 15
Fox Steelfin
K&B GH 19
McCoy LB 19
Enya 35BB
K&B GH 35
Merco 35

All the glows are fitted with Enya #3 plugs.

I've got 8*6, 9*6 and 10*6 props.

For the diesels I've got Model Technics D1000.

For the glows I've got some 22% oil (50/50 Castor/Synth) and 29% oil (60/40 Castor/Synth).

Any problems with the 8*6s on any of the 15s, 9*6 for the 19s/21s and 10*6 for the 35s?

Should I use 22% the Norvel and 29% on the other glows>

I can't answer your question, but I sure would like to go help you test all those engines. That is going to be fun!

On the Norvel I would use Missle Mist. They like really high nitro 25% or 30% or Cox fuel. I've found that a good Pep Boys large truck muffler with hand built adapters from my shop piped outside, there is little noise at all. I run very large engines through this system with no hassels from neighbors. Muffler is about $30.00 bucks. On the other hand, when into the cups and entertaining friends, I will run my Saito 450 (3) cylinder with straight pipes and shop doors wide open to counter the boomboxes on the fourth of july--awesome sound!! My suggestion: add 9-4's and 8-4's to your prop mix. You won't know until after they start easily that the iron piston engines are broken in by prior owners. If, as often can happen, they still need to be broken in, you want them lightly loaded. The Fox 15 and Taipan 15 both will prefer 8=4's anyway. I can't comment regarding Norvel. I will say we don't do business with them. Period.

Balance all props, at least on a razor blade teeter prop rig.

The GH 19's liked 9-4's well enough, amd the McCoy 19 liked an 8-6 fairly well, but start at first with a 9-4. If you discover that the 35's weren't broken in, use a 9-4 on them as well (although I always have liked cutting a bigger prop, like am 11-4, to about 9" to have a little extra flywheel effect.

the only one of your diesels I am familiar with is the the Rivers Silver Arrow 3.5. Actually mine is one of the 3.2's made for the US market. I got this engine used and fiddled with it for over a year with no luck, nothing better than a few pops. Then I read the glowing review in Feb 1960 Model Aircraft. Easy to start, not fussy, super powerful, etc. etc. Took the engine out to the test stand, fired it right up and no trouble since (except when the needle came unsoldered from the thimble, now has a Fox 15 NVA) According to the review, peak HP, just under 0.40 BHP, is achieved at @ 16,000 RPM. Said to turn a 9 x 4 at 13,000+, which mine does.

I think your McCoy 19 and Torp 19 will both like 9 x 4's or 9 x 5's.

22% on the Norvel will be fine for test and minor breakin, the machining is real close on them, but for competition run a higher mix. Plenty of Russian FULL SIZE MIG's planes in this town of Santa Fe, that actors and big wigs fly, a doctor across town flys a recent new Sukhui (don't know if I spelled that right), seems strange seeing them with the old Iron Curtain red star on the rudder at the airport. Of course their is a German bomber too. Who knows?
