AARRGGHHH!!!!!! Paintin'

HHHEEEELLLLPPP!!!!!
Guy's I am havin' some sort of an adhesion problem on the fillets of my new bird... Only on top and only one side, the paint (Auto Lacquer primer) is constantly lifting! The other 3 sides were done in the same manner and no problems..I am usin' the primer straight from the can, unthinned, applied with a brush. I sanded it again this mornin' and cleaned it with Martin Senior "Cleans easy".. Maybe this will help..
Some of you expert painters advice sure would be helpful.....

This may not be much help but did u use aero poxy from brodak?

What did you use for fillet material?
I would not use the primer straight from the can. If you thin it down, the thinner will soften the prior substrates promoting better adhesion. Dont be afraid to tip the thinner can, I have always thinned 2:1 (two parts thinner to one part paint,dope,clear, primer etc). Larry, NorCal Circle Jerks.

Gil, I think Larry is right. The thinner gives it the bite.I just did the same thing, but I sprayed it at about 1.25 to 1. No problems.

Guy's, I used West Systems epoxy and micro baloons for the fillets. As I said all 4 sides have the fillets made the same way, and only one is lifting, also used primer straight from the can on the other fillets. One thing else that I did is use Borden's wood filler on them.. It is just this one fillet that wants to lift???

I did the same thing to the Stab fillets and don't have this problem....... Gil

Hate to say this, Gil, but Don Hutchinson is going to see you used Borden's(Elmers)wood filler and he is going to relate his experience using it on one of his F86's. Verry interesting!

Yep, I did use the Elmer's filler for light wood once for filllets and while it looked terrific after sanding it to shape, I found that it got soft when applying dope over it and seemeed to stay that way. The solution of course was to dig them all out and use a different material. I am now using the Light blue colored epoxy/microballon stuff from the aircraft supply house. Sets up slowly enough so you don't have to rush the application, sands much easier than epoxolite and is light weight. Called "Super fill" by Poly Fiber, about $15.00 for a quart! Poly Fiber also made the best butyrate dope I have ever found but I hear they no longer make it! Rats, I only have a little left!

As I've posted before, I use West Systems 105/205 epoxy and West Systems 410 fillet maker. Very light, easy to work with and have yet to have adhesion problems of any kind.

You did clean the fillets with Prep-Sol or alcohol before applying primer and used latex gloves to keep you're finger prints off of it, didn't you?

If it adheres everywhere exceopt one fillet, the problem is likely contaminate.

Me too. Love it. Best stuff ever.

Agree....I too, would suspect contamination. Clean with alcohol, follow with light coats of properly thinned dope and allow to dry thoroughly between coats.

Yes. Never use primer straight from the can it wikll take forever to dry. It is made to be thinned. I would thin at least 1 to 1 with Omni reducer.

Oh sorry, I forgot. Omni Reducer is the elixer. Good for gout, arthritis and oh yea, thining anything. Inert, self polishing and glorious!
