Some new flyers havn't heard-

It's gratifying to see that C/L is getting young flyers joining the ranks. Dads with their sons and daughters. They may have never heard of tinitus and how the sound of motors can cause it. I'm just reminding them to wear hearing protection. We've been over this before but with the newer folks showing up, it can't hurt. (I need an icon with a headset on a smiley face! best regards,

is that the wonderful thing you get when you been flying at brodak's all day and you can stear hear the plane's running when you lay down to go to sleep?

at brodak's last year and at other contests, i have laid down or whatever but still heard the engines, i dont know maybe it is just me but it seems like after i have been around running engines all day it kind of carries over or something i dont know

I just have my boys stick there fingers in my ears while I start there planes. But then I don't know where that finger has been. Maybe ear plugs work better. Just kidding.

Same thing happened to me when returning from a contest at NewOrleans about 1956. I kept hearing the motors running. Thought it was crickets along the highway as we drove home. Unfortunately, the motors and crickets are still screaming away in both ears and it's been almost 50 years. It's something that can be easily prevented if parents are knowledgeable-but if nerve damage has occurred it's irreversible. No laughing matter. Take care,

I took a proper hearing test a few years ago. About half way through the tech said, "You a bird hunter?" Said I was deaf right where shotgunners go deaf. I had to fess up to the shotguns, the models and power tools. Still have mid-range loss and ocassional tinnitus. Where those ear plugs.....

I still here those dang dog obedience tools. Me, the dogs and sometimes the cats are all rollin on the floor when they blow those darn things. Full range is still doing good. I work in pretty loud white noise now, but it isn't a high enough Db level to cause me problems. Not like working at good year or anything like that.

Short term motor running should not be a problem with most motors, especially muffled modern motors. But some of the older barkin motors and the ignition ones are probably loud enough to cause damage with very little exposure.

Earplugs, whoda thunkit?

Some years back, while attending the Nats, I stayed at a motel in Anderson (about 10 miles away from the field). Getting back to the motel one night, I heard what sounded like an engine on a CL plane going round and round. Sounded like a racing engine, too (high RPM).

No, I wasn't hearing things. I found out later that there was (is) a tethered car track somewhere near that motel, near Anderson. And they were running their cars at 11pm!
