Here we go again. LOL!!
In a recent post to a recent very long post, the comment was made that we cannot hide behind a screen name because we all have a redily available "Profile" in the archives.
WELL NOW....... that just ain't so! There are many among us who have not filled out a profile, or did not list their name.
I do not understand the need for anonimity.
Then, as most of you now, I don't really hide anything, anyway!
What's up, guys? Some of y'all might live near each other, etc., etc., etc.,....... we would never know if we don't know who you are!
Anyway..... I am on a couple of other "hobby" forums, and you MUST provide a profile to be admitted..........
And I will gladly supply phone number, home address, etc., to anyone here who emails me. Just my "upbringing"

I do feel that full disclosure of name and address should be a requirement to post here. There is to much potential for libel and slander to occur without recourse.

I must be also in a number of US gubmint' lists. I remember being at a demonstration at 5th avenue , NYC in 1978 or 79, and the FBI was takin pics of all demonstrators. The funny part is that I was just makin' a buck. These Porto Rican cats hired this "Salsa" band, and we where on top of a stage, which put us in evidence.

I also recall leaving my fingerprints at the emigration department.

But those where the days when all you had to do was to NOT be a commie, and I wasn't even a "pinko"...

Whoa, Guys! Thanks for y'alls responses, I just wasn't clear in stating what I was getting at. We do have a "profiles section" here, there are just a TON of them that, when checked, have little to no information, including names! Some "members" DO NOT EVEN HAVE a profile.
I would just like to see the profiles updated, or at least done.

I tried to address the issue on the other post and will here, also.

First off, It is required that you fill out your name and e-mail. I also would like for people to add at least their city, state (and country). That way we know who you are.

"Screen names" are no problem as long as we can find your information in your profile (the little face icon in the upper right hand of your post). I went to requiring registration when we had several (too many) "cute" anonymous postings with less cute "observations". Tiring of that, I reluctantly went to requiring registration. I receive an immediate copy of every new registration on the forum and I check each and every new registration to make sure it is accurate. I occasionally have someone try to sneak by without giving a true name. I will then send them an e-mail and ask theim to do this If not, I delete them. Several times they tried to register with a fake e-mail address. The forum is purposely set up to send you a randomly generated password by e-mail before you can log on. Once you log on you can change the password to whatever you want. But this makes sure the e-mail is a working one. The funny thing is several people have tried to get by with a fake e-mail address. They aren't on the forum.

Now, it is possible to delete your information once you log on. I can add it back, so don't try that. If you do it purposely, I will delete you. And, by the way, your e-mail address is accessible only to those who are logged on, so the spammers cannot get you for those who are afraid of that.

We have had a couple of glitches in the data base that somehow keep the profile of several people from showing up. If yours does not shnow up, please contact me and I will fix it. In a couple of cases it was there, but just didn't show up. I had to delete the account and restore it. But I can fix it.

A lot of people have also set up multiple accounts--either because they forgot their password or thought they couldn't change anything without setting up a new account. I can change the pasword for you if you forgot it. You can change anything else that needs to be changed. You cannot change your username, because that would allow people to go anonymous once again. The only way to do that is to set up a new account and for me to delete the old one.

Because we were getting a lot of duplicates, for better or for worse I just deleted all accounts that were unused (meaning you were not logged on with it, not that you didn't post) in the past two months. If that dropped someone that really wanted that account, I am sorry. We can restore it. But it was the simplest way to eliminate a lot of the duplicate stuff. You know what one you are using. And if you are using it, there is no problem.

I am always curious as to why anyone would join a forum, and then wish to remain anonymous. Maybe they are in the witness protection program?
I do believe that the Nazis, Stalin, Cambodia, and a few other leaders/groups, dealt in a lot of secrecy, also.

There is no way to disable the profile as I have that option turned off. If it is not showing on someone it is a glitch and I will fix it for anyone who has that problem.

I do many things voluntarily that I'd hate to be required to do.
But since you mention it, I'll be sure to fix my profile.

Maybe they haven't gotten around to filling out the little form.
Maybe they got confused and didn't save it correctly.
Maybe they filled it out 3 times, but as the forum protocols evolved,
they got tired or forgot.

I believe that the Nazis and Stalin relied on lots of paperwork
to keep track of who was where and doing what. Many people
who survived those regimes did so by neglecting to fill out
every little piece of paperwork that came their way.

The original post, and your remarks, rub me the wrong way.
You try to use social pressure to force people to conform,
to require what used to be voluntary and fun.
I hate that.

The SSWF profile information seems pretty benign to me.

Many times I have looked at folk's profiles just to see what area of the country (or world) they were in.

Notice how Len doesn't put us on any advertising lists, email or mail? Seeing as how he is in business and this is HIS forum (he pays the bills), that wouldn't be at all unreasonable. Yet he does not.

Let's not be so easily offended. Listing your city and state in a profile on this forum clearly is NOT to be equated to gathering information for gestapo or nazis.

Sure, we all do. It's part of the fun.
But I don't pressure people to fill them out, wondering out loud
what they have to hide. Makes it less fun.

If I'm curious and they're not listed, I just ask them.

I agree. Similarly, neglecting to fill out your profile,
or choosing not to fill out your profile,
or even lying deliberately on your profile,

LOL. "Zip" codes identify federal zones inside States. Some people don't like them and don't use them. The PO will still deliver your mail to the closest PO even if you just mark it with your name and c/o General Delivery and the PO address of the closest PO to you (in my case, it is DeMoss Station, Houston, Texas). They will hold it for 30 days for you to pick up. It is a felony for them to refuse you this service.

I am sort of like that when I go visiting a hospital. I hate picking up a bacge and mostly just pretend I know what I am doing and where I am going and nobody bothers me.

However

I also do volunteer work in a high security prison. I was in there one day on my way to the multipurpose room and a guard hollered at me. I turned around and he then apologized when he saw my badge. Without that badge I would probably have been put in line and soon found myself wearing a blue jump suit with yellow stripes down the side.

Once inside the prison, there are 7 electronically controlled doors to go through to get back to the outside. Someone else controls those doors. Without that badge, those doors aren't going to open. Sometimes it is good to conform.

Blue suits, with yellow stripes, oh, my! Those guys wouldn't fill out their own forms, so the man (not Billy W.) filled out their forms for them. Be nice. What I always wondered about is why all the profiles say: "Group - Normal" I don't think so! Steve

The choices are "normal" "member" "team" "moderator" and "administrator". I could probably change it to member so that all the abnormals wouldn't have to feel normal. Each of the "upgrades" in status gives you additional privileges. I could, for instance, charge admission to a certain forum, and only "members" could then post to it (such as the Classifieds). Under the designation "team" I can set up a hidden forum that only "team" designees are even able to see, let alone access (none such exists on this forum). "Moderator" allows you delete and edit privileges to a specific forum and "administrator" gives you full access to everything. This is something you don't want to give to PaulyP or Fubar, else the whole forum would probably disappear.

But "member", yeah, I suppose I could upgrade everyone to "member". Ah, but then we wouldn't all be normal anymore.

Now they have computers. I know a guy who makes a lot of money writing compilers for government supercomputers. Worse yet, he flies combat.

As is well known, I am exceedingly courteous to and respectful of all my Canadian friends. Well, the exception may be Mel Lyne, whom I merely tolerate. As will you.

The problem is that the Dreaded Canadian Stunt Contingent, based in the Vancouver, B.C., area is constantly on my case over some trivial little detail. It's really rough, although brief episodes with the Dragon Lady make it all worthwhile.

To be mildly serious, you will soon land in a beautiful part of the world which is also home to some pretty serious CL Stunt fliers.
