Jim Kostecky 1940-2001

Do not like to have to post news like this, Jim passed away
suddenly over the weekend.

Designer and author, "Talon", "Formula S", "Cutlass, and many other construction articles.

His sense of honor and fairplay is remembered by all his competitors. Often known as the best flyer never to win the NATS. His artistic background lead to some of the most beautiful and graceful designs ever flown in control line stunt competition.

Jim returned to competition after building a replica of his 1961 "Cutlass", which he flew in the "classic" competition at the Nats
and the Brodak meet. The "Cutlass was published in PAMPA Stunt News. He refused to compromise and stayed with traditional building techniques to retain "the spirit" of the event. My biggest regret is that he was not able to enjoy the reunion of the Vintage Stunt Championships "VSC". We made plans to meet in Tuscon in 2003. Now I must carry on without my dear friend.

I met Jim at the 99 Brodak contest when we were both flying in the Classic event. He was flying the new Cutlass he had built and documented in Stunt News. It was mostly a hello, how are you, but at least I am glad to have actually met him in person. His Talon and Formula "S" are to me the most beautiful airplanes to have ever graced the control line hemisphere. I again appeal for all of us over the age of 50 to take special health precauctions to ensure we are able to enjoy this hobby as far in the future as we possibly can. Get a check-up, take low dose asprin. Whatever it takes to get through ALL of the Golden Years!

I had the plans for the Formula S on the wall of my bedroom when I was in high school. I loved this plane. Never have built one, but I've been wrestling with what to build for a classic plane this winter. Now I know.

I'm very saddened to hear of Jim's passing and wish to extend my condolences to his family and friends. I had the chance to meet with Jim at a stunt contest in Cleveland OH in the mid 90's. His knowledge, sincerity and sense of humor left a lasting impression on all who had a chance to meet him. I have long admired his artistry with design and building. His design articles are a treasured part of my stunt library. I'm also involved with free flight and along with another modeller I'm currently leading a beginner/intermediate building and flying class for 9 weeks.
The featured model we selected in late September is Jim's Tutor rubber powered design. We are at the final stages of construction right now and my eager young pilots will be flying in week or so. The look of joy on these young kids faces as their Kostecky Tutors take to the air is perhaps the greatest tribute any modeller can achieve. Goodbye Jim, You are missed but not forgotten.
