Finish over .75oz glass

Hi All:

What are you using to finish over .75oz glass cloth? I have a new cowl that is covered with this cloth and epoxy and sanded slightly.

I will eventually use auto gray primer and BC CC auto finish.

Need to fill the slight weave from the cloth and dont really want to add silkspan to it.

Aaron, and I, have gone to the Z-poxy (can't remember the actual name of the product, Randy Smith suggested it) resin to attach our fiberglass.
I really like the fact that it gives a hard finish, but it really ends up sanding out real smooth. Maybe a thin coat of that over your cloth might give you what you are looking for.
On my new classic plane, I am going to try and pull off an "outstanding" finish using dope and zinc stearate, so I am going over my cowl with silkspan now.

I use a mixture of Polycrylic and corn starch. It fills the weave and is very easy to sand.

Hi Paul,
That is a good system. Have you used auto primer over it? Mainly, does lacquer primer affect the polycrylic?

Thanks guys--the rest of the plane is done with PC per godzilla. I used PC and talc for filler.

I put the cloth down with WEST epoxy but wanted to find something a bit lighter for filling the weave.

Perhaps i'll try the PC and Talc here too.

I use PC and zinc stearate. I make a mixture about the consistancy of thin mayonaise. Just brush it on and let it dry a few days. Sands and fills very well.

The best thing really is just sand the weave away as is...

Yes but that glass is so thin as it is, if you sand off the weave, half the glas is gone. I used the glass on the cowl to make it stronger--it is carved out awfully thin in places.

The rest of the solid panels came out great. Not too keen on using it on the flat control surfaces tho--seems to curl flaps and ele up like a potato chip--ALMOST goes back flat when dry! I tried weighting them down flat but the stuff wouldnt dry that way. I thought you used a teflon cutting board or similar and weight them flat?

I've only used a poyurethane primer over it but I'll bet the gray primer will work just fine.

I'm going to use gray primer over a PC base soon, and I'll post the results. I think it will be fine.
