Fuel in the Rockies

It is impossible to find SIG Champion Fuel in any hobby shop within a 50 mile radius of my home, which covers the major population centers of my home state.(Utah) Is Tower Hobbies fuel an acceptable substitute? (with the proper amount of castor added, of course.) I don't see anybody badmouthing it--maybe because nobody uses it?

brew your own it is easier in the long run.

That seems likely. Where exactly are you? I recall a fuel maker in Colorado called "Magnum". They were supposed to be willing to mix what you want. Have you asked your LHS if they can order SIG or PowerMaster for you? Wildcat has a good rep, and if you can get their Ducted Fan brew, it's good for modern ABC/ABN engines right from the jug. Steve

Well, you are right. I think nobody is using it. Tower fuel is blended by Morgan. Morgan is Cruel Power. You get the idea (I hope). Figure 14% oil and go from there. But the local hobby shop probably has Cruel Power, so why buy Tower? Buy it locally and save all the shipping costs. Still, if you can get them to get some SIG, you will start out with good fuel.

Can't get SIG in SLC? That's surprising.

I have had plenty of good results with SIG and Powermaster. Either may be ordered at what I consider reasonable cost.

I've done enough fuel experimenting over the years to come to the conclusion that a lot of the "lore" associated with fuel is not really all that accurate. Just get a quality fuel with the contents list readily available, and pick the one whose ingredients meet your needs.

I currently use Powermaster in two different varieties. I use the GMA for the PA, and the regular 18% oil R/C fuel for the RO-Jett (both in line with manufacturers recommendations). I like the repeatability and also the ability to know which batch a particular gallon comes from. So far, it hasn't seemed to matter, but if there is ever a problem, it will be traceable. When the there were problems with SIG in 94-95, it was impossible to determine which fuel might be from a good batch, and which might be from a bad batch, without just trying it and seeing. Whatever the problem was, it's gone now, but it was awfully frustrating. Had there been some way to track batches, the collective efforts of the stunt community would have figured out which were good and which were bad in about two weeks.

Call Buzz at Magnum Fuels in denver and he will mix you what ever you want in four gallons lots.
