Dr. Jekyll in bare bones

I took Dr. J over to Al's house to visit Windy and Al took some pictures for me.

This is a completely slicked out Polycrylic, zinc stearate, and carbon fiber matt finish. It weighs 34 oz so far. Since it is completely filled, it should be a few ounces ahead of the Mr. Hyde.

This is my favorite finishing method so far!

The cowl is carbon fiber, the mold was made from my plug by John Grigsby. HE also molded this cowl. It is soooo cool!

Great looking airplane. Put a point on that rudder and it would strongly remind me of my "UNITED". I plan on trying your finish on my next "United VI" piped airplane.
I need to call and ask you some questions I have first. Working on "United V" now which will have a good old "BIG JIM ST 60" in it. I decided to go back to basics.

OK, dumb question: The flaps were probably just stuck on for the sake of the picture and I assume will also be finished in the same way (carbon fiber, etc.) But what about the rudder? Why did you finish it this far before putting on the rudder? I assume you will put the same finish on it? (Or are you still experimenting with rudder shapes?)

This will have an ST 60 in it, right? (Just kidding!)

Flaps and fin are finished in PC and silkspan, as they were finished at the same time at the Mr. Hyde. I like the carbon better, it is inorganic.

Could you elaborate how the cowl was molded? Was it a male mold or female mold? Layup schedule? Lost foam?

I did the Katana elevators with CF veil and PC and found it more dificult to fill than the light span and CF I used over the rest of the plane. Any hints for the CF?

Also, did you have any problems with the PC curing when you weighted control surfaces down? I had some TE distortion caused by the effects of the PC on the elevators.

Female silicone mold.

Use 1 to 1 zinc stearate to PC to apply the matte.

No. Did you let the PC Tack off before you weighed the parts down or did you weight them down wet?

The PC should be tacked off before you weigh the parts down. Did they need to be weighted down? Usually just laying the tacked off parts on a flat surface to dry is fine. I do not recomend letting the parts dry leaning against a wall.

If you used silkspan you can just re-wet the parts with PC and try again.

THey definitely needed to be weighted down I think. I didn't let them sit very long before putting them flat with weight. just long enough to finish the opposite side.

The flaps with span came out fine. slight dip in the TE of the ELE using the CF. I'll try it differently next trip.
