The prop is a Bolly CF prop painted and clear coated. The real Hughes H-1
had a chrome prop, with some black on the backside.

The cowl is carbon fiber with a dummy radial engine. Kyle at Tank's Hangar made a solid balsa buck that John Grigsby and I used to make a fiberglass mold. We then made the CF cowl in two pieces. The dummy radial engine comes from Tank's Hangar (tankshangar.com) as well, and is available in almost any size. Very cool and easy to build (all laser cut).

The Hughes has the same wing, stab, elevators, and numbers as the Sportster. I'm using the Saito 56 and the plane weighs 58 oz. It is covered with clear Monokote, Ozcover, and Ultracote and painted.

Any chance we could all order a "super-short kit" (ribs, formers, COWL, plans, etc} of this?? Inquiring minds want this...

MCM: We have rib sets available right now. I can also get fromers cut no problem. I did mine out of lite-play for strength. I did add some lightening holes. The cowl is carbon fiber and we do have the mold for it still, so that can be done; but it won't be cheap. I'd have to ink the plans as they're just in pencil right now. If you don't mind me asking; why did you use three different types of covering?

Jake: I used clear Monokote on the wings for its strength. As for the other coverings, I like Ozcover the best, but there were just some areas that I couldn't get it to go around as good as I could Ultracote, so I used Ultracote in few places. No great plan, it just turned out that way.

Wow! All three? What were the reasons for using all three? Did you use a specific film for a specific part of the plane?

As a sidebar:
Howard Hughes is buried in a cemetary here in Houston. His tombstone originally had a small cast model of the H-1 Racer on a swept stand or pylon at the top. There was an article in the local press a few years ago about the deplorable conditions around the grave site: trash and empty beer cans and etc. strewn all over and someone had sawed the H-1 model off and stolen it as a "trophy".

A lot of us got to see it fly today at Texarkana. Very impressive presentation!

For anyone out there who may be interested, I am inking the plans for the Hughes H-1 (they will be 2 pages), and John G. and I have discussed doing a short kit containing the following: laser cut ribs, laser cut formers, laser cut rudder (outline pieces), laser cut wing saddle, carbon fiber cowl and plans.
