1st OS LA experience

Have 2 (no longer-NIB) LA25's. What remarkably friendly little engines! Is this typical of other's experiences with these engines? Are the 40s as friendly, too?

2 - 3 flip starts out-of-the-box; no offer to "bite"; cool running (I can grasp the front bearing housing tightly immediately after shutdown, and it's only warm!). Cylinder head is cool within 1 minute.

Turning a Zinger 8x4 at a rich 2-cycle, 12K-13K on 14% nitro with 23% oil, and exhausting an oil cloud a FOX would be proud of.

I've searched the SSW database, but can't find the "right" prop for use on a Flite Streak ARF. IS it 9x4 or . . .???

9x4 APC is the prop most recommended for the 20FP/Skyray combination and those like it.

I'm glad your LA 25 works well. I gave up on mine, put an FP-25 in its place and have not looked back. I think I will donate my LA to the club Junkyard wars team for this years Brodaks.

I suggested an LA 25 as being what Top Flite names for their ARF Streak, to a new arrival on our flying site. As far as I know, his only engine experience before that was some Half-A's. He had no trouble starting his new purchase, although he needed help with getting a needle setting that was going to be useful.

I was surprised that it didn't end up either too speedy with the 9-6 prop he used, or else find that prop too big of a load to spin comfortably. David got repeated starts and flights in. I was well impressed with its user friendliness.

However, I will say that some of the folks I know who tried matching that 25 with various currently available combat RTF's were not so well satisfied. One friend, Sonny Myatt, in Houston, has offered me both of his LA 25's for just one running OS 25 F of the kind that his brother in law uses (I got Mike McVickers { -- oops -- fixed} a couple of those from eBay when I still had a working mental timer to allow me to bid low, at the last minute. Somehow or other, I can't do that the same way any more!)

Hmmm? I wonder if I should ask Sonny about running a classified ad for him here at SSW?

APC 9x4 is the prop for the 25LA, perfect combo!

We had a new member show up with a .25LA powered Ringmaster. Green fuel, too much prop, and a filter outboard of the cylinder head, the only place it would fit. Ran lousy. We changed fuel, changed prop and got rid of the filter, and it was transformed. Normally, a filter is a good thing, but not outboard of the cylinder head on a sidemounted engine. It would have been interesting to change one thing at a time, but we could see frustration, where we wanted to see elation. Sometimes, you just do what you gotta, asap. As I recall, the guy wasn't too pleased with all the mandated changes, until he saw the excellent results. Luck was on our side! Steve

I know that experience - many, many times people ask for advice, but really just want you to agree with them, even when whatever they are doing is clearly not working! Many people prefer "fencepost wisdom" dispensed by their "chosen experts" to something that violates their preconceived notions.

You are experiencing what is called the OS experience.
I have never had a starting or runing problem with any of my OS engines and that goes back to my RC days.

They are a first or second flip start every time even the inverted ones.

I have purchased the OS25,40 & 46LA engines and there wasn't a dud in the bunch. Most of my friends have made the same purchase & had about the same results, all good.

My FP25 is a horse and I believe the LA25 will be close. All runs are with GMA 10/22 fuel and either a 8/4 or 9/4 prop, depending on the airplane.

Couldn't agree more, you can't go wrong with a OS motor!

Mike I find my FP 25 to have slightly more power than the 25LA....but there close!

My Flite Steak has an OS 25LA on it. It flies about 60 mph with a 10x4 prop. 70 mph with a 9x5 prop. 75 mph with a 8x6 prop. 50 mph with 11x3 prop. 55 mph with a 40 year old top flite wooden 10x3.5 prop. My airplane is scratch built not ARF. I replaced the RC carburatior with a venturi. My fuel is 15% nitro 16% oil with 4% caster oil added. My airplane is a little tail heavy with this light weight OS25 engine.

I have three LA 25's and they all run great. I use APC 9-4 props for all of them and run them in a steady 2 cycle. Using Powermaster GMA 10/22 fuel.

The best results for me on my Ringmaster with the LA 25 have been with Powermaster 10/22, 10x3 APC, .260 venturi with a ST clone NVA. I tried other props, 9x4 was too fast and it didn't handle a 10x4 well. The plane is 26 ounces and flies well on 61 foot lines. Best flights are wet two cycle at launch.
