Small engines

With all the recent talk about small engines (19-32 size) and their appropriateness in what used to be thought of as 35 size planes, I see the trend shifting in power plants even around here.

Brett and Da Dirt have shown us an excellent, repeatable, set up for the FP 20 in the Flite Streak/Skyray, others are using 25 FP/LA in these.

The Veco 19 has shown that it is plenty for a well built Ringmaster (Fancher/Fitzgerald), and Bob Hunt used a Webra 28 in the Tucker Special that was published.
I am presently building a Yak w/Veco 19 for OTS, substituting some wood (all basically) to help keep the weight down. Plenty of power, less fuel necessary, and easily available (cheap) props.

IMHO, the only "drawback" is that many of us grew up with the 4-2 "sound" imbedded in our brains! The wet 2 run does take some getting used to, but it works, and works excellently.

Can't wait to get the FP w/APC 9-4 set up going on my ancient Top Flite/Flite Streak.

Only "downside" to the Webra in my Argus was the nose weight. Power was awesome.

Any experience out there with the OS 25 FSR BB?

I always liked the wet 2 stroke better than a four stroke. That probably came from crashing my first Nobler by not knowing how slow of a 4 stroke was reasonably useable. "I know now!, but I still prefer the wet 2 stroke. In 1961 I built a Pearson-Raffel Pegasus and powered it with a series 100 Veco .19. You don't know that plane but it was a 54" span behemoth for a .19. Basically, I used a LOT of 1/16 wood to build it with, and it came out weighing 33 ounces. I used 58 foot lines and during 1961/2 I was pretty hard to beat in Wester Associated Modelers class "A" Advanced stunt. I have no idea what I ever did with that airplane, but I am toying with building one with the Veco .19BB or FP .20. The only trouble I can see is requirements now for using a muffeler. Also, in WAM we were still flying the older in-between pattern back then. Only one square eight and no triangels, hourglass or fourleaf in that pattern. However, the Veco .19BB engine has been used in the Dolphin with great success by Bill Fitzgerald. I think that if I can figure out a way to reduce the overall weight to 29-30 ounces the Veco .19BB or the slightly more powerful OS FP .20 could be used, probably the OS could handle the plane at it's more nominal 33 ounnces, well 34.5 ounces with muffeler. You older WAM flyers that might be on the board here may remember the plane - It was Orange with Black and White Swastika's on the wings & tail.
