Just measured one of my 46 vf's and it measures 145 degrees exhaust timing. Does this sound right? Do they vary? Year to year over the years did it vary? According to the pipe timing chart it shows anywhere from 140 to 150 degrees of exhaust timing. Looks like mine is right in the middle. Just looking to set my pipe according to the chart. 12-4.25 3 blade Bolly with one of Randy's new pipes. Thanks in advance.......

I can't comment on the 46 but my 40VF has 140 for the exhaust and 120 for the transfer (this is identical to the ST G51). I've got another 40VF arriving, hopefully tomorrow, so I'll check that one out too.

I never measured a 46. My 40's varied from about 139 to 143. The best-running of the bunch was 143.

Did you check the deck heights on these, Brett? I am curious to know if the difference was in manufacturing tolerances of other components, or if it was in the actual cutting of the ports. The ports on the FPs and such all seem to be cut qite accurate, but the deck height can vary all over the place which would, indeed, affect the exhaust (and intake) timing.

The difference did seem to be in the cylinder relative to the case. Of course, 1 degree of timing isn't very many thousanths.

In case you were wondering, the head clearance on the best (143 degree engine) was almost the same as the others, just because the head gasket extruded a bit over the 11 years I ran the engine.
