Windy flew the A-26 today....here's what he said to his e-mail list:
Hi Everyone!

At 6:30 this morning the A-26 lifted off the ground for the first time. At this point in time it looks to be every bit as good as, or better than, the B-25. We had 5 uneventful flights and then tragedy set in...
Apparently, I had not sufficiently tightened the engine bolts on the outer engine, resulting in the engine coming loose during a flight and shutting off. It chewed up the cowl, but because I have a mold I do not expect this repair to take more than a week, including paint.
In the meantime I have installed extra lock nuts and have awarded myself the loose bolt award. The ship came out a full 10 oz. lighter than the B-25 and sits at just over 70 oz. ready to fly. I still have about an oz. of things I can make lighter (like the wheels) so I hope to have it at about 69 oz. by the time I compete with it.
It was an exciting day, to say the least and confirms to me the importance of having a mold for the cowling, even on a traditional stunter.

Win was flying a pattern and it started to make a real nifty sound coming out of the squares..... we all thought it great. Then the outside engine quit and it flew as a single for 4 1/3 minutes. The nifty sound was the prop eating the cowl.

Windy usually has the plans. With a project like this, he will probably bundle some videos with the plans. He usually provides the accessories for the plane if you want, like cowls, wheel pants, canopies, etc. The videos make building a plane like this feasible for us "mortals", and it provides really great entertainment value on a long term project like this one. They also help to keep you from making serious mistakes because Windy will almost always include his errors and corrections on the tapes. Like wrong bolts.

Sorry to hear of in-flight problems with Windy's newest model.

And maybe Larry is right, I am turning into a whiner.

But I can't be the only who is good and tired of Windy referring to stuff like this as being a "tragedy."

Words mean things, and a scrunched cowl, even the crash and total destruction of an outstanding PA model, does not in any way equate to being a tragedy. Even if it's my model. Maybe especially if it's one of my models.

I never see crashing one of my models as a tragedy. Disappointing, yes. Embarassing, on occasion. Crazy-making, every time. But a tragedy, no.

Watching someone else crash my plane, this can certainly be seen as a tragedy on at least a personal level. Munching something that can be repaired, well, what? A slight inconveneince? Certainly irritating.

Bruce,

Just because you're on all-liquid diet doesn't mean you have to take out your frustration on Randy.

While I've got your attention, I'm hoping the ARF/ARC survey in latest Stunt News has not gotten any of your mates off on the wrong track when it comes to the 2004 NW Regionals, or any U.S. contest for that matter. ARFs and ARCs and other sorts of non-B.O.M. compliant models are most certainly allowed in our skill-class competitions.

Hey Bruce, what gives? Here it is only a week away from the Regionals and you're not already in Albany practicing. Shame on you. Sure wish I was going down. Got to work that weekend. Besides my new Sukhoi had a minor accident on landing when the stooge got in the way of the LG. Got it repaired today and will get some finish on it over the next few days. Still trying to find the right prop for the thing although I'm close.

Naw, we're not coming now, Allana is in tears that you guys won't let her play with her ARF Nobler. I told her that she could still launch for me... I guess she's mad now and she's gonna bring the Nobler for some butt kicking DCSC style.

Actually, Dan I didn't know about the survey. I didn't renew Pampa this year. (Perhaps, admitting that on the forum is dangerous.) Is that Shareen behind me?

For Windy? More like yet another opportunity to demonstrate his considerable skill at repair work, write about it in SN, make a video of it to sell, etc., etc.... in short, an opportunity, and more so than the same thing would be for any of us!

I have to admit, having had MORE than my fair share of loose engine bolts (including once having the entire sleeve of a McCoy 35 depart in flight), there was an evil part of me that found comfort in the fact that even Windy has this happen to him occasionally.... (sorry...)

I also have to admit that Windy's writings are quickly becoming my favorite part of SN...

You guys must have a lot more money/time than sense then if you believe that. It's always a tragedy when something doesn't work out as it should- as the ancient Greeks well understood.

I'm sorry, I just had to take a moment and reflect on the last post.

It's, say, thirty years ago--when you were flying control line at the local school ground.

No messy chemicals, no postage.

And the amazing part is that we are just getting started with the digital revolution.

Wait until IPv6 gets here and everything over $5 that runs on electricity is smart, wireless and addressable.

Now back to the cowling at hand.

Which is wonderful in its own right.
