I know this is not a stunter, but thought it may be of interest.
In May each year we hold a Veteran's Gathering in Muswellbrook, NSW Australia. FF, RC and CL are always well supported and this year was no exception. The Vets is a rally, with no competition scheduled. It is a two day affair with a dinner and guest speaker on the Saturday night.
This year several of us built the Starbomb, which was a Bill Evan's design, published in Australian Model Hobbies in 1951. Although a 'B Class' team racer originally powered with a Delta 490 glow (anyone have one of these?), we used 2.5cc diesels and flew on 52' lines.
My Starbomb is still awaiting trim and decoration. I was lucky to have an original GB alloy spinner and original c/l wheels. Sewn hinges were used and the control system included no modern R/C parts.
My Starbomb is powered by a 1951 model ED Racer 2.46cc Diesel turning an old 8x8 Topflite wood, all up weight is 21 oz. Timed over 10 laps, it flew at just over 55mph. It takes off without fuss and lands quite gently, compared to the Vintage A racers I flew until recently.
There were seven other Starbombs at Muswellbrook. Engines varied from Taipan 2.5 to Super Tigre G20 diesels and all flew around the same speed. With three up it was great fun and shows that speed is a relative matter. Actual racing would have been a waste of time, as not one of the engines would re-start hot.
