Anyone have their Cobra started yet?

I saw a bunch of folks speaking of their Cobras from Walter.

Has anyone started yet? Any early pics?

I just love that plane...

What will you use for power? I'm not sure on it's statistics size wise.

YES......had to stop and slow down....TRIP, Practic, Estate sales, and just fun. I have 3.5 hours into it and have the wing, crutch done and paint ordered.

I've opened the box, but I won't be starting this one until I have finished the 3 other planes I currently have in various stages of completeness - which means I won't be starting it until next year. I have, however, removed the video from the box and started watching it, and that allowed me to get all the parts safely back into the box so it would close nicely and allow itself to be taped shut. I have NO idea how Walter manages to figure out how to get all that stuff into the box so neatly in the first place!!

That's one of the three. It just needs some sanding and then it's ready for covering and finishing. I've also got a Phoenix 2 (Richard Spurling) covered and in the early finishing stage, so that's two planes I could get finished in time to fly this season. The Fancher Twister is still unassembled, so that'll probably be next fall's project...

The last I-beam wing I built was the Ambroid Ares kit, in 1964. The Cobra will be next winter's project. With Walter's kits, you have to buy them when you find them - they sell out fast.

The Cobra has 580+ square inches of wing area. I'll try a RO-Jett 40 in mine.

I only met Steve once before he got killed. It was a shame, but at least he was doing something he enjoyed. I think the Cobra was one of his last designs. My memories have faded over time, somebody can correct me if they remember better.

Killed? Dang, I had no idea...

Unfortunately, that memory has not faded. Steve's other hobby was racing sports cars. He crashed. They didn't have the roll cages, or good helmets back then. I guess the sports car guys still don't use roll cages. Terrible loss. I won't forget that phone call.

My recollection is that it was a USAC Midget (baby Offenhauser) that claimed Steve. Willing to be wrong, but . . .

I have opened my Cobra box and looked at the parts on the top. I'm with Tim -- How Walter fit it all in that size box is a packaging feat! My kit is now airing out. (The workroom is flooded with the scent of hand-selected balsa.) I asked Walter how long the kit should be allowed to breathe before starting construction. He wouldn't commit to an exact time period, but I think he was trying to say that my mind should be clear of other distractions: say for example, a Sig Buster, an Umland Magician, and an Oriental. I am now working on clearing my mind....

Hope to get a camera and take some photos along the way.

I'm about ready to install the wing in my Oriental. Once it and my GA Special go to the "Viking Funeral Pyre" I'll be looking for another ship to build.
