Houston Contest

Ok guy's inquiring minds want (need) to know how it went as I couldn't make it due to one of the following Broken airplane #2 Broken airplane or #3 well, you get the drift!!
The airplane is in the repair hanger so maybe in a few weeks.......

Actually I posted the highest score in P40 Advanced on Saturday. In PAMPA Advanced on Sunday, I bounced my airplane on the first inside loop (readily repairable) and had a nice day of visiting. Dale Gleason won PAMPA Advanced, Gaylord Elling came in second in both P40 and PAMPA advanced, and Mike Greeb came in 3rd in PAMPA Advanced. Don't trust my memory on the rest.

Only have the group foto of Tabulators, Runners, Judges and Winners. John Hill served as ED for Racing and Stunt and also judged. Bill Rutherford, Frank Williams, and Carl Chapman were PAMPA Event Judges. Richard Oliver and Frank Williams judged P-40. Winds, which have become de riguer at all contests from now on, were a major factor,causing many flyers to prudently save their planes for the Nats. A very well run contest which served Stunt flyers, Racing crews, and Combat enthusiasts well. CD'd by Richard Stubblefield. Best regards, Dale Gleason

A couple of Texas Quickie Rat fotos at Houston: Sr.Fluker single- pits Tom Fluker's plane. Two-man pitstop of Dale Gleason's plane by National Champion Mike Greb and Phillip Dunlap.

Speed was also flown separately with Patrick Hempel as CD. Here he prays to the Bailey Jet Idol for an easy light-off. Note the vertically staggered/swept wing configuration. Patrick and his Daddy, Gene, together build fast/strong jets. A great father-son team!

I usually bring my digital camera and post pics, but I forgot it last weekend. Sorry.

Just a side note, if you guys have your contest on the same day as Topeka next year, I'm coming down on Monday and stompin someone.

Looks like you had a good contest, wish someone would bring one of those Jets up to Topeka for a demo next year.

I had a nice, long reply that dealt with all the things we tried to solve the same-day situation and lost it. Both contests are steeped in history. Topeka's flying field has a monument dedicating the field to the fallen soldiers in WWII. It was cast in 1947. We really missed the Topeka folks(and the contest)- they are TopClass. But we felt the need to support our District, too. My solution so far is to alternate yearly between the two. Control Line must be doing something right- we've got more contests than we can attend! For planning purposes, we made sure all parties knew well in advance of our plans. Best regards, dale gleason

Dunno about the cranking; but there are beaucoup fast food outlets on Highway 6 nearby. About concurrency, if anything, I'd say Topeka wanted to borrow a date when they chose Memorial Weekend. Houston has had that as a traditional date for at least 37 years; chances are good it's been longer and I missed some contests held there before 1967 (I moved from here to Houston in late 1966).

Too many contests and this darn thing called LIFE getting in the way. Gotta win that lottery so I can forget about work and get to contests.

Missed you all, just hope someday I'll be mobile and be able to get down to your events too.

Not quite.

The Houston contest was always some other weekend because the Memorial Day weekend had a traditional contest in Oklahoma City. Unfortunately, that contest deteriorated over the years until in the late-70's, it had nothing but combat. That's when we in Houston moved to the Memorial Day weekend. And that was in the 70's.

I checked the Model Aviation digital archives and the first contest listing for a Houstom Memorial Day contest is 1979.

So: we've been on that weekend in Houston for somewhere approaching 25 years.

What's the old story about getting old? The two things that go the quickest is your memory and.....what WAS that other thing!?!

Paul's is on Hwy. 6 about 15 minutes North towards I-10, great seafood: the place that looks like a boat. Molina's South on 6 on the left just past the Shell Research center has some pretty darn decent Mexican food they have been around since 1941. One of the best Chinese buffets in Houston (China Place) is on Westheimer (which runs past the park and crosses Hwy 6) about two miles up from 6 heading East on the right. There is an excellent Japanese resturant with great sushi North on 6 before I-10 (right side, forget the name right now). There are several others.

First, get square to the scoreboard, then crop out all the bare paper, plywood and railing. Lots of bytes there that are not giving us any info. Then compress as required. Hope you all had a good time.
We have our next contest next weekend, Stunt-a-Thon, with Navy Carrier added. Steve
