Recognizing a problem is the first step to fixing it. It takes courge to lay it out before all to see. My respect to you!!!

Paul,

Been there, sober now for 14 years by the Grace of God. Hang in there and beat it, you're in my prayers.

I was a beer drinker too, alcohol is alcohol.

Since you said "everybody" I guess that includes me. You don't owe me one.
Any kind of "problem" like this is merely the symptom of the root problem(s). Sometimes that is difficult to face and sometimes impossible to fix. That is a harsh truth, but it is true. I wish you well and whatever you do don't sail off into guilt trip and blame land on yourself- that is a huge mistake and it is doomed to fail.

I think the problem is more common than most would admit, and I'll drink to that. Still dealing with it....

Who the heck said you weren't a decent person? This is bull and see what I said above about going on the blame trip.

Jake,

I agree with you in part about the "guilt trip", the part I agree with is Don't go on one. However, having gone through this myself, I can tell you that its the guilt that brings a person to face his or her problem. To turn and face it head on is a healthy and necessary part of the entire process. Acknowledgement of the issues to others is also a necessary part. I have not been offended by anything Paul may have said, but I understand his need to apologize to all not knowing who may or may not have been offended or put off. The alcoholic haze dulls judgement while internally is seems to sharpen it (to the alcoholic). When the haze clears and the realization sets in, the need to make sure everyone effected is made aware of the remorse one feels is paramount.

So Paul, I'd say feel the guilt and make apologies as you need to, but have the courage to forgive yourself too. Its extremely tough, I can still see the pain in my wife's eyes as if it were a moment ago. I can still see the effects it has on my grown children as they struggle with the disfunction of growing up with a drunk dad. I thank God daily that in 20 years of alcoholic haze I never hurt anyone with my truck or myself with my motorcycle. However, I deal daily with the emotional pain I caused the people I love even after 14 years.

So you see, I still recognize the far reaching consequences of my problem, but I don't carry around the guilt, God has taken care of that for me.

I'm really going to miss those off-the-wall responses from Paul.

Most of them made me look good.

Larry,

First, quit tagging along with me as I cruise through trying to get caught up.

Second, Tom Morris confirmed just a couple hours ago that July/August Bad Boy Stunt column did indeed come through just fine following another last-minute thrash, problems with a couple floppies, basic incompetence on my part.

Funny thing:

With all my BLA BLA BLA  posts about Jesus this seems to be the most "Jesus-like" thread I've ever seen on this Forum!

God bless ya all!

Randy,

I understand fully what you are saying, but I don't agree on the guilt part. I have seen this road with family and friends and I want no part of guilt or blame in any way shape or form. May great peace and good attend all you and your family do.

Jake,

Paul has called an end to this which is fine. I do need to say this however as one that has experienced this, not one that's "watched friends and family deal with it", it's different on this side of the fence. I think you missed my point, guilt is real, and it must be dealt with. I'm not advocating going around with a noose around one's neck, if you'll re-read you'll notice I said "have the courage to forgive yourself". When you do that the guilt isn't a trip, its dealt with. I found that denying guilt is pure arrogance, but acknowledgement, asking forgiveness then forgiving one's self deals with it, it puts a closure to it.

I don't want to prolong this, but I feel that understanding this sort of thing is important. Telling someone not to go on a guilt trip is like telling a drug addict to just quit. Both circumstances need to be dealt with not denied, you can't just turn them off.

For me, my wife forgave, my kids forgave, my friends forgave, my Lord forgave and last I forgave myself. That's not a guilt trip, that's how the effects of guilt are relieved.
