Viking & paint question

Here is my three and one half day wonder.I built this taking all the shortcuts possible.I needed a old time plane for Brodak and I painted the body with red Rustoleum and used the same black Rustoleum for the canopy and the canopy wrinkled. What happened Weight 42 oz Fox 59 powered.

Your wrinkled paint came from waiting too long for the red to dry, but not long enough. If you are going to recoat Rustoleum, you have to do it in the first hour and (check a can and be sure I'm right) after 24 hours. I recently had a two day old touchup wrinkle. I worry if I need to recoat the stuff in less than a week, frankly. That's the fish hook in doing quickie Rustoleum jobs.

So are you going to fly it tomorrow or Sat ?

That viking looks nice! I'll be flying my Viking to at brodaks in Old time in Intermediate. I have ultracoat checkerboard in yellow and black on the bottom of the wing on mine. Have fun with it, they fly great!

I used red/white checkerboard on my ARF Nobler recover. If you have never used Ultracote in any variation your in for a real treat as it is a little more user friendly then Monokote.
For the Nobler I used 2 sizes of chk/bd for the wing and stab. fuse was done with high tech carbon fibre covering.
Downside is that the ARF is $99.00 and the rolls of covering <3> were $60. Specialty covering cost more then the standard stuff, but it really makes a neat looking plane. Someday I really have to learn how to post pictures.

Yes it's Ultacoat and you are correct I didn't wait 24 hrs.What a bummer, it was about 15 hrs. John I am going to fly it near my house as there are no school busses at the middle school. This is my third Viking with this motor in it.FOX 59 with peace pipe muffler. I had this motor in my swept back wing stunter in the 1960's John this field is only about five miles from your house. I've used this stuff a lot, including black over red with no problem but I always waited at least 24 hours and 48 or 72 is better.
It appears Lusterkote will always crack and blister when applied over Rustoleum, even after several days wait. Rustoleum over Lusterkote is no problem after even 24 hours.
I can still smell Rustoleum gassing if a week old airplane is locked in a hot vehicle for a while. It may not cure completely for many days.

For those that want to know The plane gained one and one quarter oz.when I put on the rustoleum.It was two heavy coats on the body and the tail.I am waiting till Saturday to fly it to give it more time to set up.I used rustoleum on my first Viking about eight years ago and it was over dope and it got soft around the nose,but Eric in Florida still flys the plane. This Viking's rustoleum is over pc and I hope it will stand up better. Here is a picture of the first viking that Eric now has

The Viking looks good Ed, exicited to see it fly. My Brodak Viking flies great and I enjoy it.
