Spinner (again) am I missing something?

So the dreaded spinner is all carved, etc.

But check this out:

The back plate is flat. No grooves, nada. The front side has some grooves to hold the prop some.

Is this the way it is supposed to be or am I missing something? I bolted it down and it seems OK, but...

I got it from Brodak. It has an aluminum backplate.

I already tossed the package though...

It has a single screw that comes through the nose to a big ol prop/spinner nut.

It is a CB spinner. Yup, that's the way they are.

The backplate fits the cone only one way, so it ain't backwards. It's just that the back side is flat, no grooves, etc.

Sounds like that's just the way it is. (shrug)

The back of the spinner back plate is flat because the prop driver is normally knurled or grooved and that bites into the backplate. The grooves on the front of the back plate bite into rear of the prop.

I think that was your question.

Sounds like a TRU-TURN or old Midwest spinner.Are you sure the backplate is not installed backward? All of this type I've ever seen have a registration groove on the front of the backplate,and a corresponding lip on the open end of the cone.If these features aren't there,I'd chuck it and get one that does have them.

Edit: Len: Even the CBs Ive got have the registration groove.

I sometimes take a dremel with a needle tip bit and put some light grooves in the back plate where the prop drive will grab. Also have used discs of 80 grit sandpaper the size of the drive washer behind the back plate, sandwiched between drive and BP.
Depending on the drive washer on the engine, and hardness of the back plate, they don't always grab too tight.
