Whip control

Has any one used the fishing pole method of flying, the lines go out the line guides, hold the control handle next to the rod, and whip it around in circles?

Dang, now some of you guys will have to get more gear!

Edit- I did read a Model Airplane News that had a T38 'whip control' thats where I got the idea for this post.

A friend just loaned me a 1988 Dick Sarpolus book on CL, he shows his daughter whipping a small model on one line. Looks like a broom stick and about 20 feet of line. 2 lines? I guess if the stick was long enough relative to the line length you might do some maneuvers. The model is the "AMA Amazer". Try Muncie. Don

Many, many years ago when I was too poor to buy gas for the airplane, I tried that technique by flying with a pole (hand power) and did so out in the street in front of our house.

Nowadays I can't afford to buy gas for the car so I am back to playing out in the street.

I have an article from the old, now defunct, Aircraft Modeler. Written by Joe Wagner circa 1970, it is the full sized plan for an F86 Sabre jet, profile, flown whip control. About typical 1/2A size. He recommends a fishing rod for a whip pole (something I have available in abundance, and I suspect many others on this list do as well ). This was from their "Tenderfoot" series for the beginner. I've always been meaning to try this, and that includes recently, since it would be a hoot in the back yard. Also, with a little dihedral, the F86 would be a great FF model for Jetex 50 or Rapier power. I'll try to make the time to scan the article and post it.

Works quite well for younger kids. I had two of mine doing it when they were maybe 6 or 7. We build a couple simple foam planes together, I showed them sort of what to do, and they spent half the summer flying "their" planes in the backyard with the neighbor kids.

You can use it to wind fly much larger planes. An article in AAM or MAN way back when. The guy mounted a streamlined weight on his Banshee instead of the motor and took off the gear. He was flying with something like a 10 ft pole on 52 ft. lines.
