This kind of reminds me of one of the adventure games we played on the computer some years back. We had gotten the "cheat sheet" for this game, but normally didn't use it. There was one point, however, where you would open a window and a "worm" of some kind would eat you. Not being able to solve this, we went to the cheat sheet to see how to handle the worm. The answer: "Leave it alone."
On your bearing problem, leave the front bearing out of the case while you slide the rear bearing over the shaft and then slip them into the case together. This will either press into place, or you may have to heat the case slightly to get the bearing to seat. Then turn the assembly over and set the back of the shaft on a wood block. Heat the front case if necessary and then press/tap the front bearing into place. Use a wood dowel on this, also, so that you don't damage anything. You can then put the drive washer on the shaft, put on a prop, washer, nut, and tighten it down to make sure everything has seated properly.
