Just a pic of my Walter Umland All-American Senior finally ready for covering! Subsequent to this photo, I have begun the covering process, and the silkspan is nice and smooth! Very pleasing results so far... the Windy tapes I've been watching have helped a lot. I'll post another pic when it's further along...

Tim,

I am curious. Did you redesign the front end for a slip in from the front tank like Windy does on his planes? Do your fill and uniflow tubes stick out the bottom? Inquiring minds would like to know?????

Yep on the slip-in tank... all tubes forward. Tried to make an open-up hatch, but the way I did it was apt to make the plane break in two, so I opted for the current design. Hope it works!

I have a vintage Fox 35 for power... second generation. Must be from at least the early 60's, so it should look good on the front. No, I haven't yet flown the old modified Mars, I'm hoping to soon. I'll bring the builder out to watch 'er fly - that will be a great afternoon, I think!

Dwayne... thanks, but Walter's kit made it real easy. If I'd built this thing from plans, it wouldn't be anywhere near as nice. I do agree.. I bet it flies great.

It is such a shame to have to cover them. I guess you can tell that I have been around a while when I like the bare balsa pictures almost more then the completed pics! Really nice woodwork. Windy is the MAIN MAN.

Tim: Nice! I love the fabric elevator hinges. What did you use for material and stickum? O.K., now the really dumb question: What is the white stuff on the fuselage early on? Filler? What did you use, and do you just fill the wood, using clear dope on the Silkspan? Are your leadouts crimped or wrapped? Thanks.

Carl,

The hinges are just some material from an old sheet. I stuck them down using much the same method as JR Model Guy in his thread on cloth hinges... with dope, but he did it a LOT better. I didn't take any great care to make them all even (like by making a reference line), I just eyeballed it and said "close enough". Another difference is that I prefer to cover with silkspan AFTER installing the hinges, which makes the hinges pretty much disappear, except for a slight telltale raised part (on the color parts, anyway...). The white stuff on the fuselage is not filler, it's silkspan (early on, before extra clear coats). I did the wings using a method posted on SSW here by Dee Rice, using Rit dye to tint thinner, and then mixing the thinner with clear dope. I didn't take enough time and care with it to make it really even... I'm so far just too eager to get it into the air. I might fix my mistakes before next season, now that I'm learning how to do these things better. Practice makes perfect...

Oh... and so far the leadouts aren't finished yet, but they'll be wrapped...
