Temporary cell phones

Hello, all;

I have had an inquiry about the availability of cell phones for folks coming to the World Champs. Here's the note:

"H-e-l-p!!

I have just found out that my mobile does not work in USA!! Any idea who I can contact over there to see if buying a mobile for the duration (18 days) is cheaper than hiring in UK to take with me: total cost for the hire is $120 equivalent plus call charges at 85c per minute to & from USA callers and $2.54 to call England (or receive calls from England) !!

Any advice would be welcome."

I know next-to-nothing about cell phones. Can somebody please help me?

you can but these many places, like Staples , Office Depot, etc.
prices vary from $29.00 and up for the phone and time from .25 to .50 per minute.
These are prepaid phones . They have a special now where you can buy a Nokia phone and 100 minutes of air time for $29.99

We call it here in Europe "three band" phones. Typically we use only two bands and that third (another) is working in US. My son has three band phone which I got in "action" for discount price 1 slovak koruna (= 1/37 of USD) with slovak contact. It worked well there. He had roaming with his Slovak contract - expensive, but good for emergency.

BTW it will be helpfull is someone can tell us how to get prepayd cards working in Muncie for such phones for that one week. (and if it is worth of that instead of roaming).

You can get the phone and 100 minutes of airtime for 29.95. I think that is as cheap or cheaper than buying airtime cards.
I think it may be hard to find airtime cards for The phones you have now.

It looks we will have plenty needless phones after WC.

So along with all the surplus F2D engines and models, there will also be a bunch of cell phones on sale at the end of the WC..

That is right, the shipping our box for two models was so expensive, that I seriously think to live my model over there. ... I never sold my model before ... it is like selling a child

But my wife will certainly vote for - one model less on our walls will make her happy

The least expensive way to go might be to get a cell with prepaid minutes as Randy suggested, then get a prepaid landline long distance card so you hook-up locally to a long distance provider and prevent having roaming charges.
Haven't tried it, just speculating.
