Bob Hunt's excellent article on Bob Gialdini's Olympic Series appeared in the March 2000 issue of Flying Models. Plans shown were of the Mark VI. Plans are Carstens CD106.

Per the text, the original article on the Olympic appeared in the 1963 AM Annual.....reprints available from PAMPA Products c/o Brodak Manufacturing, 100 Park Avenue., Carmichaels, PA 15320. 11 pages @ .25 plus $1.00 for shipping, again per the FM article.

Bob Gialdini was the designer and builder and he published the construction article in American Modeler in the Annual 1963 issue. Flying Models recently republished the construction article again in their March 2000 magazine. If you want copies, let me know your address and I will be glad to send them to you.

I have the FM article but I'm really looking for the original from '63.

I'm currently cooking up one of these in my Laboratory and it would be fun to read the whole thing again since I was 14 when I first read it. If I can't find it quicker I will order from PAMPA.

If you'da called I'd have sent you a copy from my "files". How many of these will you build while I'm scratching my "you know what" and thinking about it ad nauseum? Actually, I just read Uncle Mikey's column in the new STUNT NEWS and saw he is planning a special VSC thing for NOBLERS. Might actually have to build one like we did for the RINGMASTER thing a few years ago.

Interesting mail today. No less than 3 copies of this article!! Many thanks to Bill Hummel, Ty Marcucci and Tom McClain. These guys took the time and paid the postage without even the slighest hesitation. I don't think I've ever met any of them and yet they just did it. When I finish the plane (hopefully sometime in December, I will send you all a picture (and 2 bucks to cover the postage)

I'm not sure if we ever crossed paths, but I am a California transplant here in Alabama. Ty is a 1st class modeler and quite a gentlman who lives here with me in Hunstville. He would give you his shirt if he though you were in need of it. I used to fly in WAM events back in the 50's, 60's and very early 70's. The Olympic is one of my very favorite planes from the 60's. Someday I have it marked for building, but right now i'm favoring something quite simple to build like Dee Rice's Oriental. I have the Aug 70 article in MAN that published the Oriental. The plans are shown on a full page and are 1/4" = 1" scale. I found that by blowing up particular parts of the plans at 141% or 142% you can get full size patterns to build from. 141%=99% and 142%=101% when re-magnified 4 times. Close enough for government work as they say! So I plan on pulling out some of my old articles to determine their scales and how I can make some blown up patterns to build from. On the Oriental, I blew up the Stab/Elevator, Wing Tips, Rib, Rib Spacing, Rudder, Entire Nose Section, LG pattern and Flap ends. From these blow ups I can build the entire plane. All I had to extrapolate from the 1/4 scale drawing was the wing TE to Stab TE Moment arm. It may sould like I'm trying to be a cheapskate, but not so, far from it. My higher headquarters (Wife) banned me from buying more plans, so I have to improvise where I can. I just thought that this may assist anyone else who has to improvise in the plans department like I do!

I got the Olympic article out and reread it, looking for something I thought was in it. That is a really interesting and well writtten article. Time well spent.

What I was looking for, and did not find, was a statement that a 9 x 6 three blade prop will fly an airplane exactly like an 11 x 5 2-blade propeller. That statement is in some other article, somewhere, or my brain has failed me (again).

Brett Buck commented in another thread that people were flying Fox stunt 35's with 3-blade 9 x 6's. I used to run 11 x 5 Zingers on my Fox 35's in stunt airplanes with good results. Interesting!

Well, now Jim, after them kind woids, you can have one of my copies of plans for the Oriental. I met the leader of the "Jive Combat Team" a long time ago and again at VSC 13. Saw his version of the "Vulcan" and is far more impressive live than on film, so you can imagine just how nice it is. I do love this hobby.
