That was the view of Joey Dunlop. One of my heroes and killed in just such a race.
I love the Isle of Man TT, but you must admit there is something truly insane about racing on public streets. And these are not exactly well-maintained streets by any stretch. Plus the curbs, just past which is a sidewalk and then the front of a rather solid building.
It's a great race, I am glad they are still running it, but when Dunlop was killed I shifted to appreciation of the skills seen, not the men doing it. Can't get too attached...
In my view, while done at some antiseptically clean tracks, this year in MotoGP there is some truly incredible racing, the likes of which we will never see at the TT.

I saw all of the first gen NASCAR guys drive at quarter mile tracks in the early '60s. Guys like Junior, Fireball Roberts, Joe Weatherley, Tiny Lund, Buck Baker, Curtis Turner, Jim Paschal, others. Anyway, they were guys that actually "graduated" from actually running the stuff for a living, Thunder Road style.

I've been dying to go to the Festival of Speed for years, and we had it all planned out for this year until the esteemed Bernie E. went and moved the USGP to June thus moving back the Festival which is now to close to the NATS for me to be able to make both. Curses!!
We do have a plan going for the Revival, hopefully it will work out. ANd, I have managed to play a round of golf at Goodwood.

Indeed. I stand corrected. Would loved to have been there to see the presentation, listen to Junior's porcupine-powered Chivvy blast up the drive.

Have done hundreds of laps of the I.O.M TT crcuit. Visited the TT races every year from 1960 to 1986. The atmosphere is magic all week. Took a G.A. Peacemaker a couple of times to fly on non race days. Found a couple of grass circles in Peel park. Very little activity from the local C/L flyers. Maybe the smell of diesel.....
BTW the roads on the TT circuit are always kept in pristine condition.

Envy is not something to be guilty of, but I felt something close to that when reading your post.
I have absolutely no doubt the atmosphere is magic. But roads in pristine condition? Maybe you mean they are clean or something as I see all manner of patches to the pavement, more than a few of which look to have been done by amateurs with cold asphalt, a great many of these patches in corners. And of course there all the dips and doodles, head-shake inducing whoops, well, all of the stuff one would expect to encounter on back-country roads and which add so much to the character of the TT.
I do not believe I was ever young enough or foolishness enough to travel these roads at anything above eight tenths.
