We were out flying today on Josh Field ( the circle we cut in my Grandma's back yard) and I got the first flight of the day in. The wind was blowing just a little, the Flite streak was ready to go and was running nicely, and I was looking forward to being out on the field with my brother,my dad, and a cool can of root beer. There was nothing on my mind, but flighing untill my arms fell off. We got out to our field and ran the lines out. I grabbed our new hard point handle and my dad flick the prop a few times. It was sceamming! I gave the ok sign and he let it go. I was enjoying the pull of the Fox 25 I did a few nice wing overs with it and was thinking it would be cool to do a loop. Just then to my self "What am I doing sitting here thinking about doing one I know I can do it." I gave the plane full up and it climbbed went inverted for a split second and dove some before pulling up. I did my first LOOP! It should not be long until younger brother is doing them. when i was his age I was scared of the red platic model that sat in the corner of my room collecting dust, and he is doing wingovers. When my brother flew he was running 5 second laps. I thought he was going to rip the paint right off. He flew so fast one time that he lost both his wheels. He is thinking about starting to post out here. When my dad flew he got something called a 4-2 break. He later filled me in on what it was. When I next tried to do a loop I ripped my tail off. I have also been busting engine mount screws like crazy. My plane took more damage in one flight than Josh had all day. It was like a pilots dream out there. It was a day of 300% fun.

Ah, yes. An injection of youthful enthusiasm. Seems timely somehow...

Hey Ryan,
I truly enjoy reading your posts. They bring me back to the days when I was your age and able to go out with my friends and fly every day until our arms fell off. Warm summer days with nothing to do but fly.

I don’t know how well the weather will cooperate this week but I’ve been thinking of driving down one of these afternoons/evenings to fly with you guys. I’m only about 35 miles north of you.

In an earlier post, you mentioned some other plans for your week. What days will you be in, and when will you be leaving?

I met Paul and Ryan and Josh today At Josh field.I talked to them yesterday, when I found out they were only about 5 miles from me.I flew for the first time this year. What a great bunch of people.Ryan is a very nice young man.He is going to be competition for the rest of you in a short time.Josh did not fly with us today, but I did get to meet him.We really had a blast.Nobody around here flys U/C, so I had to wait for someone from out of state to come up here to get me out again. What a good hobby this is.It's a good feeling for a 68 yr. old to meet up with a 14 yr. old and his Dad, and to see the enthusiasm in both of them.Kind of gives you a warm feeling.

HI! Ryan:

Glad everything is going so well.I wish I could come out and fly with you,but that would mean a 5000 mile round trip.I'm glad your dad figured out the 4-2 break. You should try it on yours. It will seem slow at first, but if you can get to about a 4.8 -5.2 sec lap with a good "break"you'll find the loops(and all the other maneuvers)easier to fly.If you fly too fast you'll find that it's difficult to "keep up",and you always want to be able to think "ahead" of the plane.

Another tip;on the loops, try not to pull full up to start the loop.Too rapid control input can make the plane stall.what you get is a small half loop and then the plane falls out in a stall, making a figure 9,and a crash.Keep trying to fly BIG maneuvers. This will keep the model flying at greater airspeed and you'll do a lot fewer "figure 9s".Only small control movements are needed for all but the very tight maneuvers like the square loops or triangles, and even there you don't need all that's there. At your stage of learning you should try to fly nice big ,round loops.Keep trying for smoothness, and the ability to put the plane where you want it when you want it there.

Keep up the good work,

Ron B.
