Had a chance to speak with Busby at the soccer field the other day. I was telling him I just got to flying inverted and outsides over the last couple of weeks on the OS LA .25 S APC 9-6 Ukey 35 and the TT .25 GP R/C MAS Scimitar 10-5 Nobler ARF. I’m pretty happy with both of these planes and he hung around to watch me fly the Ukey. His only comment was “looks a little fast, do you want to try a 9-4” and of course I stupidly said something like “naw, I think it likes to fly a little faster and I like the higher tension, makes me feel like I got a little insurance” Note to self: Talk less and listen more.

After he left I flew a couple more flights and then decided to try a 9-5 I had. Everything is the same, but it’s happening a little slower now. This is good. Wish I had a 9-4 to try. Hey, didn’t someone just offer me one?

While I was setting up to fly I told him about how much better I was flying the year because I had gotten a power plant combination on the Ukey that was very consistent. Easy to start and just the same every time, so I could concentrate on scaring myself learning new tricks (they only become stunts later, I think.) Busby says a good set-up is easy, just find someone who is doing it and do it the same way. So now, I’m ready to listen.

I’ve been in a real debate with myself on my next Nobler ARF. You know the one with the Tom Morris control system, for when #1 finally piles it in. I really like the TT .25 in #1, but I am drawn to the idea of “can’t have enough power” so I’m pretty well set that I will be using my OS .40 LA RNV R/C w/STOCK MUFFLER. I’ve got the parts I need to loose the carb (stock OS “large” venturi and spray bar) but we’ll still be running RNV. I tried this engine briefly in #1 but wasn’t happy, didn’t try real hard, and really wanted to see if the TT .25 would work anyway.

I know I’ve seen this discussed as a part of several threads, but can’t for the life of me find it in a search. Seem to recall a specific set-up from Mike ? with follow up from someone, maybe Dan, saying listen to Mike?

All comments will be greatly appreciated and I’ll try to listen this time. I gotta say that suggestions about adding head shims, grinding boost ports, etc. may be dismissed. I guess I’m hoping for a B.B. kind of a solution like the one from Rowena’s vet.

Best,

Clay

Were you at the soccer field on Sunday afternoon? Was Mac, David, Charlie there too flying with Marshel? There is a different group of guys that flies CL at the same soccer field on Saturday. I flew Sunday for the first time sence March because of all the Tornados, rain, lighting, high wind, bad weather we have been having this spring I have not been able to fly. I started to go to the soccer field too but changed my mine and flew at the high school parking lot near my house instead. Its an 80 mile drive for me round trip to fly at the soccer field and only 2 miles to the high school. I have a large selection of props you can borrow any thing I have. If your going to fly at the soccer field next weekend let me know I will bring my airplanes and fly too. I fly by myself most of the time its fun to fly with Mac and Marshel they have good helpful ideas. I fly an 8x6 and 9x5 on my OS Max 25 LA combat airplane a 10x4 is a better choice for stunt flying with the OS Max 25 LA. I have been having some fuel problems with my Nobler, OS Max 40 LA engine, I changed the fuel tank and redesigned it several times too, this weekend I connected a pressure line from the muffler to the fuel tank and it solved the problem. Now the airplane will do a inside or outside loop without the engine stopping. For the moment I have given up on doing a square loop, all my square loops turn out to be square on one half of the loop then triangle, hex, round, or something weird on the other half of the loop. I am also practicing doing round loops that are not egg shaped.

Clay,

I believe you are referencing a thread begun by Ferocious and in which Mikey (Mike Pratt) dealt with three engines, one of which we are forbidden to talk about, the 25FP and the 25LA.

I do not know what to tell you about the 40LA, but do like your approach as this sort of thinking is finally going to come around to making sense to a lot of us even if not with all engines nor all modelers.

It's the approach I would take should that make any difference...

Actually Dan, We are all allowed to talk about the OSFP20 it's just YOU that isn't allowed. Now go sit in your corner for awhile.

Am I picking on you enough?

Dennis,

This is because I am *special*. Meanwhile, I don't see you talking about the 02PFSO. Or are your "offensive-to-one-guy-and-for-no-known-reason" postings deleted even quicker than are mine?

You could never pick on me enough or too much. I think you're a pretty good guy. Other than the deal about Fox 35s...

Amazing!

Thanks for the thoughts on the set up Gary. The soccer field is often busy with soccer players (imagine that) and so I usually don’t fly there. I usually fly over in Fairview, which would be further away from your house I guess but let me know if you’re thinking about heading over that way.

Dirt,

Can you help me with this?

Try a .262 venturi with an OS spraybar(.135 in.) or .277 or so with an ST nva. 11/4 or 11/5 prop, depending on the speed you want. Add a head gasket or two if it trys to run away on you. I would skip the rear mount nva. It will run OK with the inverted engine, but it just adds two more places for leaks to happen.

The LA 40 has turned out to be a very dependable engine - and it's inexpensive, too.

I am running the 40FP venturi (.282) with an ST needle valve. Add one extra head gasket and try the APC 10.5x4.5 prop. I'm using 7.5 percent fuel and get 92 - 9500 on the ground, leaning to 10,500 in maneuvers. This is a great set up for my profiles.

On the NoblARF, I'm using an APC 12x4 cut down to 11x4 and it also works well.

I agree with Phil: lose that rear needle valve. It's a PITA to set properly.

Have fun,

want a bulletproof setup?? Chuck Brodak 40 in the front with a 4oz sullivan round clunk tank, uniflow.

flag the LA 40 as they are a mite heavy and you will need to add tail weight........Stunt model + extra weight= bad.......right?

In the battle of airplane V ground, the ground is yet to lose.

Got the O.S. “large” venturi from T***r. Following on Phil’s advice I decided to measure, as best I can, and it looks like 7mm. This agrees with the T***r spec sheet, no info on the O.S. site. Recommend for use with the .40 and .46 LA-S by O.S. Interestingly the “small” venturi for the .35 and .40 FP is also listed as 7mm. If my ciphern on the abacus is correct that’s about .275591 in. I’m sticking with the RNV till somebody mails me a drop in front needle (yes I’m a begging, cheap, little ……) Actually I just want to keep it as simple as possible. You understand that sometimes when it's just casually mentioned to measure things to the .00? inch, or drilling out something .00? more it may be beyond the capabilities of some (ME) in terms of confidence, tools, etc. But I’m working on it.

Don’t misunderstand; I really appreciate all of the input. Gives me lots to think about. I also got a couple of APC 11x4’s as a starting point. Now talk about something that seems heavy! Guess I better finish assembling the plane.

Clay

PS Anybody have a Brodak 40 they want to trade for an OS LA .40? Explaining to wife about “new” engine I have to have instead of using the one I already own = bad……right?

Happy 4th to one and all. All you have to do is travel the world to see why lot’s of people want to live here. Please don’t get political on me, I’m just saying Happy Birthday.

I am using a .40LA in my Nobler ARF with great success. It has the stock venturi, about .085, with front NV assy. It also has a Tower .40 metal backplate, and a tongue muffler from Leonard. I am using a 10/6 Topflite Power Point prop. I have added no additional head shims. The Nobler now has the Nobler kit clunk tank with muffler pressure. I tried a Hayes 4 oz. tank, and the stock metal tank, and although they worked well, they didn't have enough capacity. With 5% nitro, and 22% 50-50 oil, I launch at 10,000/10,400 rpm. It really powers my Nobler well.

I own several LA 40's and I also own several Brodak 40's. I would disagree with anyone who calls either engine "bad". I have had good success with both engines and think you can easily set up either one to suit your needs for the forseeable future.

The LA 40 is a little heavier and it's not finished as well as the Brodak 40. It's also 33 percent cheaper to buy (comparing my last purchase prices of each).

Send your address to me at [email protected]. I'll be happy to donate a stock OS needle valve. I prefer the Super Tigre, but you have to drill the venturi and the carb boss on the engine (#22 drill). The OS NV will slide right in, no mods needed.

Enjoy,

Hi Clay. This is late, but between Marshall Busby and Mac Henry, they got me into the air at Marrietta with my DeBolt Continental. I have an OS .25 FP in it and it is way over powered. They helped me get it running consistantly, trying different fuels, props and needle settings and changed the elevator control so it was not so sensitive. They accomplished this in just two flights. This was the first flight on this plane. To these gentlemen, listen and do as they say. They are two unsung heros in this hobby. I'll listen to them about props and engines any day.

Hello Ty,

10-4 on that good buddy. Going to have a fun fly this year? I may have the BEG. pattern by then. HA! You will recall last year that I could not get past what I think you called the Omega, a new pattern shape.

Best and stay cool,

Clay
