Farmland and Atz Ice Cream

14 miles due east of Muncie, on the way to Winchester Raceway, is a town named Farmland. Farmland is unique for a couple of reasons: it is a picture perfect "small mid-western town", with flags and well kept lawns and 100 year old buildings.

The former grain depot by the tracks is now an Antique store, and yes, you can climb up to the top to examine the stuff for sale there.....apparently the owner has an interest in Tree Hugger Type health foods, because there are a couple of rooms full of natural foods.

There is a shop that will custom build a quilt. Another builds stained-glass windows.

There is a shop that features a candy store and antiques......the good antiques....for years there was a genuine Army Duck there ($2,500) and last year a Uni-Mog, as well as assorted practice bombs, John Deere stuff and NASCAR hats.

But the best feature of Farmland is the Chocolate Moose Café. The Café is in a tin ceilinged, century old building, staffed by the most refreshing young Indiana lasses.....and features all of the foods that make the natives so "wholesome"....a double bacon cheeseburger ($3.95), or a pork tenderloin. But the best thing about the Chocolate Moose is the Atz Ice Cream.....simply the best that I have ever tasted....great flavors (though no coffee) topped with good sauces and genuine whipped cream.....
Everyone that I have introduced to the "Moose" has returned.

"Chocolate Moose" must be an Indiana thing. There were a couple in Bloomington (one survives, on South Walnut), no knowing if it is in any way related (haven't seen anything called "Atz").

Oh.. I finally remembered the name of the Fort Wayne ice cream thing - it was called a "Mad Anthony".

I think Peabody is calling you out!

Doug and I took Peabody's advice several years ago and tried out the Chocolate Moose cafe. Awesome! Good food, great shakes, and a real old fadhioned soda fountain type diner.

That's it! I take it anymore. What in the world is ATZ ice cream!!

ATZ is a brand of ice cream originally created by a group of Indiana dairy farmers. They were great dairy men, specializing in Guernsey’s and Jersey’s, know for their high fat content milk, just what you need to make a great ice cream. However, they were not great marketing men. While trying to originally name the product a big argument broke out. One of the farmers shouted “I don’t care what you call it, ATZ great ice cream!" The name stuck and the rest is history.
